One of my friends had a bird who could produce the electronic sound of the phone ringing and THEN the sound of it being picked up mid-ring and my friend saying "Hello?" (COMPLETE WITH HIS ACTUAL NORTHEAST ACCENT). He'd make some unintelligible comments, and then say "Okay, bye." and make the beep of the phone hanging up. If you heard it from the other room, you'd swear the phone rang and got answered.

The bird also could mimic the sound of the security alarm code being activated or deactivated on the keypad next to his cage. I can totally see why mystery writers use the bird tattletale trope.

That bird could mimic my cousin’s laugh so exactly I thought it was Richard.
