(102,292 posts)Single-use paper towels would be preferred, but such waste is not sustainable, given shortages on paper products. So, taking both the science and practicality into account, a towel for each person in the household, washed frequently (at least every other day) and used ONLY to dry already thoroughly scrubbed hands, would be my preference, all things considered.

(102,292 posts)You can either toss them in the washer or bag them for later washing every other day or so.

(25,183 posts)take your oldest, rattiest bath towel and cut it up into pieces. Yes, that's why you hung on to it so long, for times like this.

I like the mask with the little flap for a straw.

(6,799 posts)Occasionally, I use a kitchen towel. The towels are changed daily. I thank my washing machine every morning.

(17,986 posts)Good question! I use half a towel. Bounty comes that way.
Another question, are you cutting back on how many Toilet paper sheets you use?

(8,445 posts)When I my now-ex-husband first came into our household, back when my kids were teens, he lamented about how much tp was being used. I'm not sure why, because I was the one who bought it. He instructed us all that we should only need four squares.
FOUR SQUARES!!!???????
Needless to say, nobody listed to that gross advice.
But no, I haven't cut back. I was stocked up, as usual, before the panic buying started.

(17,986 posts)Buying mega rolls when they were on sale but have heard from others, especially the elderly who grew up in that generation where you did not waste.
The one time I went shopping they just put out a skid. I managed to get a 30 roll mega ,equal to 60. I ask others if they are OK because on the Neighborhood board people with families were searching. It seems to have eased off now.
We had this hoarding before,TP, sugar, coffee.

(8,445 posts)Of course some food is good too. I go through about a pound of sugar a year, so it's not something I worry about.

My local store has Maxwell House on sale every 2 months, 5 for $10. I realized I had 14 cans of Hazel nut. Avoided the last sale!

(8,445 posts)I realized that I had about 20 jars, so it was time to skip the sales.

(29,673 posts)personal matter. No ones business how many squares I use. Oh, and loved the Seinfeld episode, can ya spare a square.
Rorey
(8,445 posts)One square is no better than no squares, really. I'm trying to remember who it was in the other stall. Jamie Gertz?
Ah yes, it was. [link:http://

(21,596 posts)I have hand towels in both baths and in the kitchen. Ive separate dish towels which are only for dish drying. I wash our bath towels every three days. I use paper towels for hand drying too, but I use paper towels mostly for cleaning and disinfecting purposes.

(8,445 posts)Years ago I started keeping a nice basket filled with these towels in my kitchen. I've got dozens, and probably go through at least a dozen a day. I hang them to dry so I don't have a pile of yucky, damp towels in my laundry room, and then I bleach them when I'm laundering to sanitize. I use them to dry my hands, as a dish cloth, to wipe down counters and cabinets, etc. I try to not use too many paper towels.
This has been working well for me for years.
In my bathrooms, I change my hand towels every day, but it's just me and I'm fastidious about how I wash my hands. Always have been. I also have paper towel holders for guests, but who knows if I'll ever get to have guests again....

(9,730 posts)No matter how well you wash your hands, if you turn off the faucet with your bare fingers, you have contaminated them again. Same goes for bumping against the sink while washing your hands.

(3,011 posts)I put a stack near every sink along with a separate hamper. After each hand washing, we use a fresh towel and launder them separately. I'm not sure it's necessary, but I'm really preferring it to 5 people using the same towel. Paper goods are NOT an option. We're rationing all paper goods

(6,139 posts)do not reuse hygiene stuff. We are not even allowed to bring our own bags to stores anymore. This is new reality - everything single use only, no sharing. Thank god my family is prepared with a sufficient supply of surgical and n95 masks, not wearing underwear on my face.

(44,973 posts)The reason being, paper towels are hard to come buy, and i want to preserve them. Whereas cotton towel, you can wash and reuse.

(36,311 posts)My wife just recently bought enough hand towels to do that and I don't need to do laundry so often.
I wash and dry hand towels, towels, wash clothes, underwear, socks, dish rags, and cleaning rags using the sanitize settings on both appliances.
