Two weeks ago I flew home from Bonaire--a tiny Caribbean island off the coast of South America--

through Miami a week early from my birthday trip that had been planned for 10 months.

I have posted bits and pieces about that trip--even some photos--but I post now to celebrate that I have made it through 14 days and I am symptom free! Yeah! I flew home from an island that had NO cases--and still doesn't--to a county in NC that had a handful when I returned and now has 66 cases as of last night.

I used the first couple of days to stock my freezer, pantry, refill prescriptions, get books from the library. I've made only one 10 minute trip to the Dollar General store on the corner a block from my apartment for a few things last Friday. I do have to go out several times a day to walk the dog, which means riding the elevator from my 17th floor apartment. I stay away from people on the street, but sometimes end up with someone else in the elevator with us. I wash my hands for a long time every time I come back into my apartment after going out.

There are restaurants doing take-out and delivery in the downtown Raleigh area where I live. So far, I haven't used one of them. I figure I will need to go out to the regular grocery store to resupply in another 2-3 weeks, if I can continue to get a few things like milk, eggs, lettuce, butter from the DG on the corner.

I have friends who live on Bonaire. They have told me the island is now closed to any air traffic from Europe, the US, or Canada, and has been for over a week. They haven't allowed cruise ships to dock since the 14th of March. It's a very tourist dependent island. What is most interesting, is that the Dutch government (the island is Dutch) is guaranteeing 80% of salaries to all workers until it is safe to open the island for tourism again.

Stay well!

Might I suggest that you remove your shoes and street clothes at the door when returning from the DG?

I have to go out to work (at a distance from fellow workers in a now closed to the public government facility). We work 3 days a week and the other employees work a different 3 days. I only interact at a 6’ minimum distance with 5 or fewer people. I do any food shopping or gas purchases on the way home, then I remove all street clothes and wash them. I wear rain boots that I can wash off.

I have hand sanitizer, bleach spray, hand wipes, napkins & tissues at home, work and in my car.
I haven’t touched any knobs, handles, levers or keypads directly in weeks.

My family has always made fun of my constant nagging about hand washing, not touching door handles and spigot handles (especially in bathrooms), not touching buttons and keypads, etc.
Well, HAH! Lookie who was right! 😉

My kid now has online school and piano lessons. Our school district is doing an awesome job with this crisis. He’s got a live google meeting at 11:00. They have access to online libraries and books in addition to online STEAM resources. They’re even having school spirit days just like usual. Today is wear your favorite hat day.

You be safe too, UpInArms! I hope you are well supplied and comfortable in your personal isolation zone. I am especially grateful for DU in times like these.

I am good and safe in my isolation... we began stocking up in February with the premise of

“When you think you have done too much, figure out what else you can do”

I, too, am so grateful for DU ... it has been my sanity rock for almost 20 years

if I didn't have an elderly dog at home. Would have cost me considerable $$, but it would have been worth the price to be in a beautiful place that felt much less risky during this time of crisis.
