Terrible, terrible news. It was a dream come true to finally play John Coltrane on my show a week ago, and when I did, I singled out the contributions McCoy Tyner made to his music. One of Trane's lone "hits"..."My Favorite Things" (not the song I played)...is MADE by McCoy playing TWO NOTES. Things shift down around mid-song, McCoy is playing TWO NOTES, it sets a tranquil, meditative tone, there's improv on top of it, the whole song gets its power from what he played and how he played it. For me, this is the equivalent of "another Beatle died." Tragic day for music.
