There is a new film being made about Noah's Ark with Russell Crowe playing Noah. Having grown up in a religious conservative household, I never gave the Noah's Ark story much credibility. A big boat with 2 of every kind of animal? I've always had trouble with this story, even as a kid when I believed things that I am embarrassed to admit today as an adult. I remember really getting into this heated argument years ago with a lady I use to work with. She was a very religious woman who acted as if she was there and knew for a fact that the story was one hundred percent accurate.
My problem is, even if it were true people actually thinking the ark is hiding someplace in plain sight. Mt. Ararat in Turkey is believed to be the resting place of the ark. I think the wood after all these years would have rotted. So, the thing is this. I never had an interest in Noah's ark since I was a kid. In my mind I debunked it and just dismissed it. I love a good conspiracy, even the ones I have a hard time believing. This one never really got my attention.Until now.
I'm reading a book by Nick Redfern called The Pyramids and the Pentagon. Its a fun read and it talks about the CIA's interest in Noah's Ark.I'm learning some things I had not heard before and am just curious to hear what some others think about Noah's Ark and the story, the myth, and their thoughts on the subject.

(5,364 posts)I kept pressing the teacher on how ( in as many words ) it was physically impossible to:
-Gather two of every single species everywhere
-Fit them all on a boat even several times the size of the ark
-Get around the logistics needed for food and water and such
I also pressed on the inhumanity of letting all the other innocent animals drown.
Same with feeding multitudes with 5 fishes and bread loaves. Between gutting, deboning and even the most judicious of meting out portions, you'll at best feed a dozen or so people adequately, or at worst taunt a hundred starving palates with a mere morsel.
The teacher stayed very composed and pleasant, but I wonder if she harbored thoughts that I was going to be trouble later on.

(54,013 posts)That would explain the unique speciation of Australia without the time it takes for the floods to recede to create an Asia & Indonesian landbridge, only to later come back and reflood the area once the marsupials had all crossed over. See how smart God is?

I was astounded to learn otherwise.

(6,036 posts)Most every culture I think has a myth about an ancient flood. Ancient history left enough of a mark on these cultures that the stories continue forward to today. Chance favors the prepared. There has likely been some horrific floods 6000 years ago plus or minus a millennium. And some souls had the good fortune to have been in a position to survive the flood when it came.

(33,688 posts)Consider only that there are tens of thousands of species of ants on the planet, many of which live thousands and thousands of miles from the Middle East and only in certain places. Most were unknown until the advent of modern scientific investigation. How did an ant that lives only in South America manage to find its way to the middle east and then back to say, Brazil.
The penguin and polar bear problems are also pretty obvious.
Just more fairytale silliness worthy of zero consideration by a rational modern person.

(8,747 posts)Was the historical "memory" of a great flood. Since the "flood myth" cuts across a number of cultures. there might have been one or more catastrophic localized floods. But, I don't I believe the Bible's version of the entire Earth covered.

There also has been speculation that a large tsunami in the Mediterranean Sea caused by the Thera eruption, dated about 16301600 BC geologically, was the historical basis for folklore that evolved into the Deucalion myth. Although the tsunami hit the South Aegean Sea and Crete it did not affect cities in the mainland of Greece, such as Mycenae, Athens, and Thebes, which continued to prosper, indicating that it had a local rather than a regionwide effect.
Another hypothesis is that a meteor or comet crashed into the Indian Ocean around 30002800 BC, created the 30 kilometres (19 mi) undersea Burckle Crater, and generated a giant tsunami that flooded coastal lands.
It has been postulated that the deluge myth may be based on a sudden rise in sea levels caused by the rapid draining of prehistoric Lake Agassiz at the end of the last Ice Age, about 8,400 years ago.[5][6] The great deluge finds mention in Hindu mythology texts like the Satapatha Brahmana, where in the Matsya Avatar (Fish incarnation) of the Hindu deity Vishnu takes place to save the pious and the first man, Manu.

(54,256 posts)If I remember correctly, water can not be 'created' or 'destroyed'.
We have the same volume of water we've always had since the earth was formed.
It gets redistributed, but how could you get enough to cover the entire planet?
Bull. Shit.

(21,484 posts)the professor said that Noah's flood was the first time it rained on earth. He said that up to that point, mist rose from the ground and that took care of watering everything.
I don't know if that's in the bible, but I remember -- even back then when I was still a Kool-aid drinker -- that that was baloney.

(5,062 posts)I can't remember but either Bill Maher or Ricky Gervais said something about Noah that at the time I felt was right on. It was hilarious.
I was curious if even the most devout Christians and extreme bible thumpers talk up the Noah's Ark myth. I'm glad to hear others feel the same as I do.

Any discrepancies from scientific or historical fact are explained by god working in mysterious ways.
I remember being a young teen in the mid~late 70s and seeing a "documentary" on Noah's ark and them stating that it had been found on Ararat. I can't remember if we saw it at church or if we were given a special exemption from the ban on going to movies (hollyweird was a sin!) this one time to go see it at a theater.

(5,062 posts)Is this the film? I remember my Dad taking me to see a documentary movie in the 1970's about the Bermuda Triangle. I was fascinated by it. I find the Bigfoot,UFO's,and the Bermuda Triangle more entertaining and probable than I do Noah's Ark.

(4,945 posts)The distributor would lease the theater (all four walls) and present their roadshow carny bunkum.
The practice stretches back to the 30s with "Reefer Madness" and "Birth of a Baby"
It had its final flowering in the 70s.

(19,243 posts)You've got literally MILLIONS of animals on board this ship, with 90% of them being insects and spiders of some sort crawling all over everything around you, and on you while you sleep.
You've got animals screaming, braying, trumpeting, and shitting EVERYWHERE for weeks and weeks on end, at all hours of the day.
You have to make sure they all get food and water every day for the entire trip.
It's dark and hot and it stinks and there's little ventilation.
You can't kill any of them no matter how often you step in a steaming pile of shit because then you'd be driving a species to extinction and violating God's will.
The ship is swaying and heaving in massive waves, because the entire world is underwater, and Dramamine is still 5,000 years from being invented.
And to top it off, you and every other person on board this ship are carrying MULTIPLE varieties of STD's, because we know they couldn't have all evolved or anything so therefore they must have been brought with on the Ark. That, or there was one unlucky fucker who got to carry every known kind of crotch rot known to man and somehow survived long enough to infect his own family with all of them before he died so they would carry on to this day.
Make a movie of THAT Noah's Ark, and I will be there opening night to see it!

(85 posts)Can some believer explain a few things I cannot understand. Australia has over 500 animal Species unique to that continent. How were they brought to the Middle East? After the ark came to rest on a mountain in the Middle East how were they returned there? How were the Polar bears returned to Arctica? How were the Penguins native to Antarctica returned?
