I'm just THAT happy for my friend
I didn't know her during her 'famous' years, but Rowena Wallace was one of the most well known and popular TV stars in Australia during the 80s and 90s.
I moved from Melbourne to a seaside country town nine years ago and met Rowena when the battery fell out of her mobility scooter. I put it back. She'd moved down here when the work was drying up, money ran short and she was facing legal and financial problems. She lives a few doors down from me.
Since then, we have become firm friends. She's the kindest person on the planet; hopeless with money, complete introvert unless she is on stage and suffers from bi-polar disorder. At 72, she has become crippled by scoliosis and self-doubt
A few months ago she was approached by a production company for a role in the musical "The Secret Garden". Small role - Mrs Medlock, the housekeeper. Rowena hasn't worked for ten years and badly needed the money - but she has two poodles.
Not a problem, they can stay with me. The poods spend a lot of time at my place anyhow. She accepted the role and as I write, she is in Sydney for the launch of the show, which stages in August. The show website has, this minute, put a cast video up. Rowena is the woman with white hair, sitting down.
I'm happy for her, proud of her, and have been promised, when the show comes to Melbourne, a backstage pass. On a personal level, this will probably be her final professional appearance and I love watching her come to life at the prospect of working again.
