Was light brown, like his dad.
I’ve seen pics of him in the 50s with brown hair. Maybe he had to colored for a movie role (he was a Native American in a couple films) and liked it?

It's possible that he copied his hairstyle and color from Tony Curtis. Elvis was 17 years old in 1952 and that would be when Tony Curtis started to become a popular actor.

Whatever the reason he colored his hair, it totally worked for him. Not many people with sandy blonde hair can get away with jet black hair due to their fair complexion.

I've only ever seen one color photo of his natural hair color and that picture hangs next to the stairs at Graceland.

Elvis had an obsession with jet black hair starting in his teens. Some have theorized that it sprung out of wanting to emulate people like Marlon Brando, but he was using shoe polish at a very early age and as he became famous he moved to using a specific Clairol dye mixed with another dye.
