Bruce McConville would rather burn his own money than give it to his ex-wife, and a disbelieving Superior Court judge is giving him 30 days in jail to rethink his claim.
The 55-year-old Ottawa businessman and failed mayoral candidate sold properties and businesses behind her back, then withdrew the $1 million and, he claims, burned the money in two bonfires: $743,000 last Sept. 23, and $296,000 on Dec. 15.
McConville has long defied a court order to file an affidavit about his finances, notably where the money went from the secret sales. Because his financial affairs remain a mystery, the court has been unable to figure out what he owes in child and spousal support. As a result, he has been paying neither.
McConville also defied a court order not to sell his properties because there was a fear that he was trying to keep the proceeds out of the courts reach. McConville, in fact, sold some assets to his former accountant.

(13,485 posts)I bet they can reissue the paper and give the value to the debt holder. In the US it's a federal crime to destroy currency. The paper means nothing in real property. I think he'd have to destroy real stuff to get away with it. Just my thoughts.
On the other hand whether he burned it or not, the judge could probably hold him in contempt assuming he's lying and he'd just sit in jail.

but that assumes that he actually burned in and didn't dispose whatever was left over.

Of course, he should have given his ex her due.

(52,319 posts)he didn't burn the money, he hid it. he's only claiming he burned it to pretend like he doesn't have it anymore so he doesn't have to share it properly with his ex.
of course, i don't know this for a fact, i just know that my explanation is waaaaaay more plausible than the one he provided.
burning money, never mind a million dollars, virtually never happens.
but hiding money in an ugly divorce is as common as the common cold.

(6,212 posts)in reality he probably has it hidden away somewhere. Seems there are no witnesses to him burning it. Hope the ex-wife can find it and laugh her way to the bank.

(52,319 posts)his imaginative explanation is as plausible as the man who claims he tripped and as he fell and struggled for balance his hand brushed his zipper open and this woman fell down in front of him trying to get out of his way and the wind blew up her skirt and his privates accidentally landed inside her privates.
yeah, that could happen.
