The World's Worst Cat needs a home - "Just a jerk"....

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/animal-shelter-worlds-worst-cat_n_5e29a3eac5b6d6767fcffe4d

An animal rescue shelter in North Carolina is being brutally honest in an adoption ad for what it describes as the “world’s worst cat.”

Mitchell County Animal Rescue tells prospective owners exactly what to expect from domestic short-hair mix Perdita in a Facebook listing that is going viral.

“Perdita, we thought she was sick, turns out she’s just a jerk,” the Spruce Pine-based shelter captioned pictures of the 4-year-old black and white puss they took in on Christmas Eve following the death of her owner.

The reportedly unfriendly feline likes “staring into your soul until you feel as if you may never be cheerful again,” “lurking in dark corners, being queen of her domicile” and “fooling shelter staff into thinking she’s sick,” it wrote.

Perdita dislikes kittens, dogs, children and hugs but is “ready to be socially awkward with a socially awkward human who understands personal space,” the ad concludes. She is, however, spayed and vaccinated, per a PetFinder listing.

It’s unclear how tongue-in-cheek the shelter is being with its ad. It did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for further information.

But office manager Brittany Taylor told ABC News Perdita is “just all-out awful.”

I think I've owned this cat. Or one just like her...

“Meet Perdita, not for the faint of heart. LIKES: staring into your soul until you feel as if you may never be cheerful again; the song Cat Scratch Fever, the movie Pet Cemetery (Church is her hero), jump scares (her specialty), lurking in dark corners, being queen of her domicile, fooling shelter staff into thinking she's sick (vet agrees...she's just a jerk) DISLIKES: the color pink, kittens (yuk they are so chipper), dogs, children, the Dixie Chicks, Disney movies, Christmas and last but NOT least...HUGS. ..gata es muy astute. Comments about her character somewhat bothers me, people who care for her seem to be the problem..sets her up for failure. Even her name Perdita [lost] sets her up to fail.

Seems to me that this beatuiful feline has been neglected and perhaps abused at some point in her life and does not trust humans. It's no wonder she is acting out with comments like this--

“staring into your soul until you feel as if you may never be cheerful again,” “lurking in dark corners, being queen of her domicile” and “fooling shelter staff into thinking she’s sick,” it wrote.

toward knowledgeable cat owners out of curiosity. Depression due to environmental factors alone is well known, although highly variable in people.

I'm simply curious if it's known whether cats can be prone to depression due to inherited genetics. That would make depression due to environment far worse.

The shelter story was that she had been with a person for 10 years and the person couldn't keep her any more. We fell for the story and decided to adopt her. I suspect she was a feral someone trapped and surrendered. When we picked Sis up, she shredded the kennel tech's arm and hand, but in spite of that, or maybe because of it, the tech got her into our carrier and we got her in the car. Sis had a very sweet meow, so we fell for that too, and took her home. I had set up a spare room, so she and my normal pet cats could get used to each other through the door. That hint doesn't work, even after 2 weeks. Within days, my husband suggested we rename her Hiss, and I said "How about Swing and a Hiss?" So that's her name and everyone who has met her agree. We had just bought a big house, so there was plenty of room for all 3 cats, and plenty of places to hide. Hiss has the talent of on-demand puking, so we found puke on the bed, the hardwood floors, under the Christmas tree, and on and on. She didn't like our grand children, who remain scared to death of her, and she didn't like the other cats, most of the adults we know, and I don't think she really likes us. In 2016, John got a terminal diagnosis and we moved back to our old house, so it would be easier for him. I borrowed a carrier from my daughter and we loaded our big boy cat into mine. My other girl cat is fine to ride on my lap. When it came time to load Hiss into the carrier, what fun it was. I ended up flinging a denim skirt over her and pushing cat and all in and shutting the door before she could get untangled. So we got our carload of cats back home. Hiss seems to like this house better, but she decided to quit being litter box trained after we got her home, and is ruining the rugs, carpets and floors. I even set up a litter box in the hall closet, in case she was being bullied. Hah, that really worked and now I can't move it out and reclaim my closet because the other cats like it there. The only good thing I can say about Hiss is that she entertained John. He had a pair of spa shoes that are really squishy. In the middle of the night, Hiss would drag one out and wrestle it in front of his chair. I've seen her do it and it is hilarious. Both shoes have hundreds of teeth marks. I got my older daughter a cute pair of flip flops which Hiss liked even better than John's shoes. When I discovered that, there were pieces on both of those that were almost ready to fall off because of her attacks. After John passed away, Hiss remained aloof. She really likes our older daughter, who lives away from here. When she comes to visit, Hiss head bumps her and turns into a guard cat. Unfortunately, she guards my daughter and also treats her as the threat. Everything Hiss feels is mixed up. She'll head bump me as I work in the kitchen, but God forbid I reach down to pet her. Last year, I saw she had a hair with a turd stuck on it coming out of her butt. Keep in mind that I can get 3 pats with one finger on her head before she unleashes her claws, so trying to pick her up is out of the question. I tried all day to relieve her of this latest affront, with no success. Finally, in the evening, she was sitting on top of the couch, because I had food. I saw the hair and turd was still there, quickly got a grip and succeeded in getting it removed, as she shot away from me and my hand. Since then, she likes me a little better, and I can pet her a little longer. I changed her diet, so she doesn't puke very often, but I gave up on the litter box. MY rugs are covered with drop cloths with pee pads on top. She poops by the litter box and sees if I noticed that she is close to the mark. She pees on the pads, sometimes, but usually goes where she wants. When I get up in the morning, my first chore is to patrol the floors and clean up anything she left. I live with candles, air fresheners, carpet deodorizers, and the spot cleaner that is my best friend. The first thing I ask visitors is if it smells ok in here. I know we rescued Hiss from her scary time in the shelter, but I question that decision every day. If nothing else, Hiss will be the cat we talk about after time goes by, as the worst tempered cat we ever had.

I lost my cat a few years ago. My oldest cat was a bit crotchety, but overall, lovable.

Just today my co-worker said she needed a cat sitter while at a conference, and I volunteered. I was thinking one cat, but then said them (thinking two), and then I learned it's five! It's only three days, but wish me luck!

My 3 are all 14-17 years old. My guy is the smartest cat I've ever had, the other girl is the sweetest and friendliest, and Hissy has the largest concentration of unfriendly traits I've ever seen in one cat.

She must know I was writing about her. She has been very friendly and petlike today

Have fun with all of the cats. That sounds like fun. I am on my way to see my friend's dogs. Always feel so popular!

would know that contrary to the stereotype, cats do form intense bonds with their people and grieve when they are gone.

"fooling shelter staff into thinking she's sick" - wtf does that mean? If there are measurable or visible symptoms then the cat is sick, period, end of story. If she just looks misearable, unhappy, facing a wall... she may really be sick (cats are notorious for hiding symptoms) or she may be miserable and unhappy stuck in a cage and missing her person and home.
