The Singing Nun

The other day a friend of mine told me she'd had lunch with her friend, Dominic, and for some reason I immediately thought of the song "Dominique" performed in the sixties by the Belgian nun known as The Singing Nun, and two other nuns.

They performed on TV from time to time. Anyone here remember them?

I found "Dominique" on You Tube, and now the song is an earworm. It's a nice earworm, but it's 3:50 a.m., and there it still is!

from Wiki:

Jeanne-Paule Marie "Jeannine" Deckers (17 October 1933 – 29 March 1985), better known as Sœur Sourire (French for "Sister Smile" ) and often credited as The Singing Nun in English-speaking countries, was a Belgian singer-songwriter and a member of the Dominican Order in Belgium as Sister Luc Gabriel. She acquired widespread fame in 1963 with the release of the Belgian French song "Dominique", which topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and other charts. Owing to confusion over the terms of the recording contract, she was reduced to poverty, and also experienced a crisis of faith, quitting the order, though still remaining a Catholic. She died by suicide with her lifelong friend Annie Pécher.

In the catholic church I grew up in, suicide was a direct route to burning in the flames of hell for eternity. The nuns and priests teaching in my school instilled a sense of terror in us, so as kids we did not contemplate suicide in fear of the very painful burning to come.

She must have lost that fear of the lord thing the nuns used to employ to terrorize us kids.

Mom saw the record somewhere and bought a copy which she gave to me. Since I owned few albums, I played it relatively often. Another odd album Mom gave me was the soundtrack for the Girl from U.N.C.L.E. with such gems as the theme song:

OMG! Here is the entire album!
