I mean shit! Raw Story? Sorry, I won't even try you anymore.
Most other places; I can't remember but I am so tired of sitting there with a frozen screen and blinking white signs saying, "Waiting for ....."
I really want to quit the internet.

(29,205 posts)does not keep up with adware on most sites...
I like to play trivia games online... but had to quit most of them because of frustration over site load times... and it isn't my computer.

(16 posts)I don't know about computer specs, but I highly recommend installing AD BLOCKER (free) or GHOSTERY (free). Both work quite well to keep me ad free. Of course, you should also be certain the POP-UP BLOCKER is on in your browser.
I use Firefox as my browser and place adblocker as an add on.
All that crap is blocked on Youtube, Twitch or any site you may use. I don't mind supporting certain sites with ads, but it gets absolutely ridiculous sometimes.

(22,482 posts)and realized that I had one disabled; most likely because they insisted it be disabled. And it froze my screen - again.

(14,492 posts)It got to the point where they were trying to load so many auto-play videos, as you said it would freeze the page due to overloading my 'puter's memory. Never go there any longer.
What I love about uBloc ad blocker with Firefox is that I can quickly turn it off when needed. For example, in order to watch videos on the UK's Guardian news site, I just temporarily switch it off and then back on when I'm done watching.

(38,316 posts)Also, my favorite ad blocker is uBlock origin. It works with firefox or chrome. Get it from their respective stores.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ublock-origin/cjpalhdlnbpafiamejdnhcphjbkeiagm
https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/ublock-origin/
It's available for a few other browsers as well.

(22,482 posts)what looks like 3 ad blockers from Chrome I can't read RawStory because one that still pops up is the one asking you either to whitelist or pay. And then if I whitelist it is not even worth going on the site.

(46,328 posts)I have had to "whitelist" a couple sites.
But Adblock Plus lists the number of ads blocked.
I tried reading a news page, A+ told me they it had blocked 46 ads.
This is no longer bringing in revenue to pay for a site.
This is naked GREED, bombing us with ads.

(73 posts)This stops any code on the page from running, so you don't get the annoying Ad Block messages. You have to do it right before the message comes up so that the page can load first.

(7,809 posts)I can't stand Raw Story any more. I gave up on Alternet a couple years ago.
They should know: a few ads along the sides are okay. It's when they have sound and motion, they are too obtrusive. Popups are completely out.

(81,861 posts)Others mentioned AdBlock plus. You also might want to check out the Brave browser. It is a Chrome browser with built in ad-block.

(38,316 posts)Sure I could write an essay, but I don't think Brave is going to last.
Look to my rainbow flag and my dislike of Javascript for clues.
Furthermore, a guy who played such a substantial role in breaking the World Wide Web is not going to fix it.
I visited rawstory once, following a link here on DU. I immediately blacklisted it.

(6,236 posts)Even easier to use a browser called Brave. It will block all of the ads too

But yeah, there are too many ads on sites today. There are too many ads everywhere these days.

(5,128 posts)Try this neato gizmo: Clear This Page for Chrome
I just tried it for Raw Story and it was brilliant. Clean list of headlines, no ads, no BS.
I usually use it for the Ferret's posts. I click thru his DU post to give his site some traffic, then hit Clear This Page to kill the sidebar, the silly font, and the dark background.
Works on CNN too. You'll love it.

(56,582 posts)Two things happen that didn't used to happen:
1. websites now force your browser to download fonts
2. websites now force your browser to download an entire javascript interpreter rather than run the one it came with
The web has been a complete disaster for about 6 years now.
