fire dept busted down the door in the condo above me to stop a fire

condo above me had a small appliance electrical almost-fire. owner went out leaving the coffee maker on, which evaporated out the coffee then overheated, melting the plastic, causing smoke. alarm went off and fire dept arrived to break down her door with their axes (she was at work) and got there before the plastic ignited. her front door is ruined and apt smells like smoke.

I went out and got a new alarm to replace the old one from 8 yrs ago

glad the neighbors were paying attention.

reminder to get your alarm in working order

1. Yep. And coffee makers are a real danger left on if no auto-shut off. Even then, I am wary. Thanks

for the reminder. A large percentage of household fires start with the electrics.

My daughter lives in a duplex that I own. Last week, her dryer caught fire. I suspect the the dryer vents became clogged with lint.

Nobody was hurt. All three smoke alarms had been removed.

Ten year sealed smoke detectors are cheap. I paid less than $12 each. THAT'S TEN CENTS A MONTH!

and for a move in gift my friend gave me a coffee maker. This particular coffee maker did not do auto shut off and both having a bad memory and never having a coffee maker that did not have an auto off I forgot to turn it off. I was out of town and half of the day later I realized I had left it on. I ended up calling my manager and she was not in the office so I had to call fellow tenants who went to the managers apartment and talked to her husband who was able to call her and get permission to enter my apartment to turn the coffee maker off. When I got home the next day the carafe was burnt beyond cleaning and repair and the bottom had started to melt. I had fire alarms that worked but it is still scary to think that a small thing like that can be so dangerous.

4. Hot appliances and ignored candles...always a good chance to starting a fire.

...see it all to often in the insurance industry.

I don't own an electric coffee maker, wife and I went on a camping trip a long time ago. Her first and I was drawing on my experience as a kid. So I got a percolator to make coffee...Same coffee I always buy...but the taste was a hell of a lot better and a lot hotter...which was welcome on a brisk morning.

Went home and looked at our electric coffee maker in disgust. When it broke, we were happy to toss it...got an electric percolator. Wasn't the same...so we ditched it, and stick with the stove top.
