The Bible says that the Lord is the Word.

Peter Griffin says that Bird is the Word.

Microsoft has Word.

When someone says something righteous, it's Word.

What a weird world where word is the word.

For real though ... IS there a proper synonym ... for 'word'?

It really would be kinda funny if the ONE WORD in the language for which there's no other word for that word ... is the word 'word' ... you know what I'm saying?

I don't want to Google it ... but I've for real been trying to think if there is one ... and I feel like there MUST be another word for word ... but I can't come up with any ...

in at least 1/2 the cases one might use the term 'word'.

Better than anything I came up with in the 20 mins or so I pondered it before posting

Dictionary.com has these synonyms for "word."

Concept
Expression
Name
Phrase
Sound
Term
Designation
Idiom
Lexeme (I really like that one!)
Locution
Morpheme (not to be confused with morphine)
Usage
Utterance
Vocable

That's all I got and I've got to go to bed!

5. Depends on the meaning of "word" you mean.

In some contexts, "indeed" means the same thing. Of course "indeed" also has meanings which don't overlap.

In other contexts, "promise" means the same thing. Of course "promise" also has meanings which don't overlap.

And there are innumerable other examples.

Are there any words which intersect perfectly with every single usage of "word" under the sun and no others? Of course not. We've already got a word for that entity: word.

As in ... 'one or more letters which, alone or combined, have a meaning that's generally understood by others who speak the same language', not any other meanings like 'indeed' or 'promise'.

For example, if I wanted to write "I wanted to tell her how I felt, but couldn't find the words" ... but NOT use the word 'words' ... what would a substitute be?

I see the synonym list above from Google ... none of those really 'works' in that context.

Words Are Used Symbolically and All Words Are Symbols

'Words are but symbols for the relations of things to one another and to us'

We may share a mutual understanding of words, or we may fail to understand one another because the symbols (words) mean different things to us based on our life experiences or frame of reference.
