Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWe adopted a dog today
First dog for the family. Our last cat passed Dec. 7 last year. The girl passed August 23 2017 - two days after the eclipse.
SPCA. $280 out the door. We bought everything we could at the SPCA shop and rounded up a bit. They don't sell food. Really really great people. My daughter has volunteered there.
I got there 15 minutes after my wife and daughter. They got to the SPCA when it opened at noon. They'd already looked at one dog but it was really high maintenance and not good with kids. Around the corner to our meeting room came this dog....and I KNEW we were going home with it. Mostly beagle and my wife LOVES beagles.
He was found in Hanover county north of Richmond. Transferred from Hanover to the Richmond SPCA on Monday.
About 3 years old. 28.6 pounds. Very well mannered. VERY quiet including walking. Seems to be housetrained. Understands "sit" but lays down. When I have gone into the downstairs 1/2 bath or into the garage he runs upstairs thinking I somehow MUST be upstairs. Hilarious.
We lucked out but then timing is everything.

(81,434 posts)I thought on no! We cant lock her in a cage all night! But by Jove it did the trick. She barked and whined and scratched and scratched the woodwork until we broke down and tried it.
Amazing! She stepped inside and curled up on the bed we arranged in there, and seemed content. She stayed put all night with nary a whimper, and seemed happy the next morning. What a pleasant surprise! And she happily used it every night and whenever we had to run out or pick kids up or something. She readily went inside and curled up and took a nap. With no coaxing or anything!
I guess they feel safe in there.

(21,596 posts)We adopted an abandoned doggie 🐶 about 3 years ago. It was about December 5 and it was a surprise for my child. Our little rescue dog has been a joy to my son and to me.
I had a Beagle as a child. They do bay, so be prepared for some noise!
Happy Thanksgiving!

(9,426 posts)has made himself at home. So handsome. Lucky boy, lucky owners. My next door neighbor adopted a beagle, Dusty. I used to call her the Dust Buster. The first time I heard her baying, I thought she had ben hit by a car! Loveable doggies. Congratulations on becoming parents again. I bet he is happy to be in a home and out of the shelter.

(182,868 posts)There's a 10 holding period for found dogs in Va. so he was probably found on the 14th. Transferred to the downtown SPCA on Monday. Fixed chipped and tested yesterday. As I said my family getting there AT noon was probably the key.

(51,623 posts)and so will you and your family. Keith Olbermann got his first dog not too long ago and ever since he has been a huge dog lover. He said emphatically, "Why didn't anyone tell me how GREAT they are?!?!".
40% of Americans have dogs now. They are everyone's best friend/fur baby. It has been chipped, right? Most animal places only allow chipped pets to be adopted.

(51,623 posts)I always feel so calm when I see how content and peaceful animals are while sleeping. My problem is that doggies look so cute sleeping that I simply HAVE to pick them up and hug them. Yours is going to sleep a lot now that it is safe, warm and has a real place to call home and can finally relax a bit.

Until you find out if your dog has this trait watch out when you get outside and the dog is off leash.

(113,083 posts)All of our dogs have been rescued dogs. You cant go wrong. We are down to one dog now, 7 year old lab boxer mix and are looking at a 7 year old lab staffie mix whos family had to giver her up because they lost their house. Kind of like just having on3 dog but cant the thought of this poor dog spending the rest of her life in a cage.

(3,601 posts)I like long eared doggies. I often say that if I had the time, money and energy to adopt a hound, I'd get a basset or a bagle. Beagles you will find, I have a neighbor who has one, are very much interested in aviation. Many times I've seen a beagle look up at an airplane and say "I can fly that plane." As for beagle ears, scratch early and often.

(8,144 posts)more personality and maybe less mild manners to emerge, but then you will know your new one is getting comfortable. Kudos to your daughter. Sounds like your doggie family member is socialized and already bonding and daughter is a wonderful girl. So sorry about your well loved and remembered cat. I dont know much about souls except that they continue.

(1,850 posts)My beloved older cat died about a month after the 2017 eclipse. My friend had a kitten I was supposed to get for Christmas 2018, but it was sickly and it died Christmas Eve Eve. I was sad and went to the humane society, no kittens so I looked at the dogs and found my 4 year old beagle/dachshund mix. He'd been surrendered 4 days earlier, and they held him for 3 days. I got there at the right time too! But mine was "on sale" as they were running a holiday special, reduced adoption fee.
He'd been with a family with an autistic child who he started growling at. I suspect the kid pulled his ears because sometimes he squealed when we stroke them, anticipating a yank. But other than that he is as sweet as can be, rolls on his back for belly rubs, follows me around too.
Beware, a few times I've had him off leash in my yard ahnd he either caught a scent or saw something and went chasing and baying after it. He's trained me to keep him leashed til we are in the house or car!
As for bedtime, mine was crate trained but I give him treats in his crate at bedtime so he really looks forward to getting in his crate. I got several toys, a squirrel that has it's paws sewn together and tail tacked where I can put a chew stick or piece of jerkey, a Santa dog with scarf I can stick a treat through, so he reminds me it's bedtime. I keep water bowl in his crate overnight and he definitely drinks from it, after he has his snack.
And I don't give him food at the table; any scraps I might save and put in his food bowl. Don't want him to expect food whenever I eat. I limit his treats until bedtime, except for one after supper.
How is yours doing at bedtime? Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

(15,649 posts)My wife and I can relate having just adopted a second dog 8 days ago ourselves. We got lucky too and actually feel like we scored, especially because we were quite ambivalent about doing it (adopting a second dog) at this stage in our lives. But our little miss Mia just seemed so beside herself the past 6 months since her older brother Isaac passed away. Now we have another male to keep her happy and she's responded well -- definitely more upbeat than she'd been for a while.

(1,687 posts)We have had three dogs that all came from what my wife calls the used dog lot. Even had a stray wonder up to our house many years ago that we took in and nursed back to health after discovering he had parvovirus. Then he ran away again. My wife said St. Francis sent him to us to get healed.
Our current little guy is Fuzzy, who is not fuzzy. As far as we can tell he is beagle, lab and husky. He is a runner and will be off if he gets out of the fence. He hates the feral cats in the area. He is the first that is truly a hunter although he also loves carrots. He is the first one that is my dog. The others all liked me but were my wifes buds. This one loves his dad.
And, yes, he howls but only selectively. He howls when my wife plays the piano.
