Literally found it. It was lying essentially undamaged in the middle of the street in a housing development. It powers up, but it's locked (of course).
I called the management company, but they said they couldn't do anything. I guess they don't have the means to keep it secure in hope that someone steps up to claim it. For that matter, it might not belong to any residents of the development, and it might have fallen off of a contractor's truck or whatever.
I have no interest in breaking into it, so how can I see that it's returned properly? I could drop it off at the police station, I suppose, but honestly I'd feel better knowing for sure that it got back to its rightful owner.

(63,213 posts)I don't have one too near me, but I drive around a lot for work during the day, so I could keep the iPad in my truck and swing by a store if I get close to one.

But, yes. I think the APPLE store is likely the best chance of returning this to its owner.
