3 castaway cows swam to North Carolina's Outer Banks to escape Hurricane Dorian

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/11/13/hurricane-dorian-cows-survived-storm-swimming-outer-banks-north-carolina/4179324002/

Three castaway cows have been discovered at a national seashore on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, where they apparently washed up after swimming for several miles to escape ferocious Hurricane Dorian’s storm surge in September.

Cape Lookout National Seashore officials think the stranded cows swam up to 5 miles during the storm before being found near Cape Lookout earlier this month.

The cows belong to a herd that roams freely on Cedar Island, across Core Sound. When Dorian generated an 8-foot “mini tsunami,” it washed them and dozens of other animals away, including 28 wild horses that died.

"I'll say it's about 4 miles across Core Sound," Seashore spokesman B.G. Horvat told McClatchy news group, the Charlotte Observer reported. "Remember, the cows and all the horses were swept away with the water surging back. Who knows exactly, but the cows certainly have a gripping story to share."
