I just spoke to a co-worker who is 26 years old and she didn't know who the Marx Brothers were and had never seen the 3 stooges.
I'm old.

(11,924 posts)and we have new programmers coming in who have no idea who they were or that there really was a Gummo and a Zeppo Marx.
When I named the machines in the computing lab I used to manage, I named them all (100 of them) using a Star Trek theme. Since I named them, I chose "Tribble" as mine. I had students coming in that had no idea what the names stood for or what Star Trek was. That age is past Since I changed jobs, the new lab director didn't like having to deal with name and changed them all to numbers.

no longer do people enjoy the witty banter of good word play of a good comedy.
or the insightful commentary upon our socital woes via a SciFi show.
the national discourse for those of a certain age have been reduced to tv morons who value nothing and shun intelligence.
Yeah, I'm old. Get off my...oh never mind.

(32,088 posts)I'm guessing that a fat chunk of these kids watch "The Big Bang Theory", which has a "Star Trek" in most episodes.

(131,107 posts)unless you're 90-something. PROBLEM is failed 'education' for your co-worker.
(Will ask my 20-something daughters if THEY know Marx Bros + stooges!)

(19,379 posts)Not literally of course, but through films and clips.
I also made sure they watched all of the classic films: Caddyshack, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Animal House, Airplane! etc. Their education is well rounded.

(30,761 posts)She is ignorant, and needs to be educated.
My kids knew who the Marx Brothers were when they were very small. I showed them them Marx Brothers movies. My youngest thought Harpo was the funniest thing she had ever seen. When she was about eight, she dressed up like him for Halloween. None of the other kids got it. They learned about the Marx brothers, too.

(11,797 posts)My dad, who's 59, LOVED the Marx brothers and the 3 stooges. I'm only 34, so not that much older.
Know what freaked me out? Some of my students (college students) didn't know who Sting was. I almost died.
