Got a 3-pack of reading glasses today. Wow! I can see the tiny little text on my phone so clearly now, and read my book with just the bedside lamp on (and without holding it an arms-length away).
What a difference! Cant wait to try these puppies out at the grocery store. But I still cant wrap my head around being horribly near-sighted and now also far-sighted. Or whatever. Oh, well. It is what it is.
In closing...
Readers rock!

(17,305 posts)two three-packs then you could tell everyone truthfully that you have a six pack.

(4,608 posts)So we did get a six pack!
They have some neat boxes of readers at TJMaxx a variety of shapes, styles, and/or colors in each 3 pack. What really made me feel old is Mom and I originally intended to split a box but discovered I need higher magnification than she does. Yikes!

(118,677 posts)or so. They did not even try and sell me fancy glasses though they had a store full of frames. I was impressed.

(4,608 posts)At my appt last month, the doc (a new one) was trying to sell me readers but for A LOT of money. They were more than the frames for my new, regular glasses!
I have a bad habit of falling asleep in my glasses (or contacts) so refuse to spend a lot on frames. Over the years, several pair have been mangled when I roll over on them or somehow forcefully smush and bend them into the pillow. Im glad you have a sensible doc!

(60,010 posts)The eye doc told me that our eyeballs continue to change as we get older, which I have noticed cause I have to get prescription changed every couple years now.
the upside of that is I no longer need readers. blind as a bat beyond 6 feet, but can read books just fine now.
We save a fortune by getting our glasses/frames on line for about 10 years now, with no problems at all.
Saved 100's of bucks.

(2,886 posts)super cheapies at the dollar store...Dollar Tree or Family Dollar in my area usually have these for actually $1...Work okay for me as I typically lose or break them fairly fast....

(43,049 posts)+1.2 or 2 for general reading. Some of the frames are really good, and I've managed to squeeze other lenses in them.
But, yeah, they get lost or stepped too easily.

(4,608 posts)Im thinking: one for the bedside table, one to keep in the car, and one for work.
Aaah. Work. Ill be able to quickly read the tickets now! Maybe I need to get a neck chain thing to hold them at work...

(1,639 posts). . . That I was nearing the age when I could expect to deal with farsightedness. Given that I was about 20/400 in myopia, I was actually excited. I thought that the farsightedness would "balance out" my vision. Even after being corrected (for my ideas, not my eyesight) I joked about having perfect vison for about 20 minutes before my eyes went in the other direction.
Being a little pessimistic at the time, I grumbled that I would probably be asleep for those 20 minutes anyway.
BTW, I felt "officially old" when a younger man that I had gone out with called me around 10:30 at night to ask if I wanted to go out for ice cream. My first thought was that 10:30 at night seemed like a reasonable time to think about winding down a date, not starting one.

(9,651 posts)until you are wearing bifocals or trifocals.
I've been putting up with three different pairs of glasses for years. Distance, reading and computer. I actually need a different prescription for each one of those uses.
But I've hit the point where I'm squinting so much, and I'm so tired of having to change glasses so I can read something, that I'm ready to ask for bifocals.
I actually tried trifocals. Almost broke my neck falling up and down the stairs. Turns out my brain could not adjust to all of those different levels of vision in one pair of glasses.
Consider yourself lucky that you can get readers. I have an astigmatism in one eye, so readers won't work for me. I have to get prescription lenses.
The joys of getting old. Or as my cousin says, "it's not the golden years. It's the rusty years."
