(558 posts)A melanistic zebra (more black than normal). The opposites are leucistic, more white than normal. Like white tigers, leucistic critters are not albino, as they don't have red eyes.
I saw a study that suggested why they are striped, because it messes with the vision of biting flies. In Japan, researchers spay painted white stripes on a bunch of black cows to study that.

(60,010 posts)When being chased, it is supposed to make it more difficult for lions to distinguish the indiv. animal in the moving pattern of stripes.
dunno, but that sure is a cute pattern on the foal. Had no idea it was possible.
