Once again it's Balloon Fiesta time. I thought I would share a different aspect of the Fiesta, Balloon Glow.

(15,804 posts)launched from the fairgrounds on Central when I lived in Albuquerque back in the early '70s. Our house was a few blocks south of the fairgrounds, and one of the balloons had a problem and almost landed on our roof; they managed to make it to a nearby schoolyard. Went back to ABQ for a high school reunion and spent the first day being completely lost!

I always consider this to be the real end of summer.
Ya know, I seem to have a vague memory of a news story about a balloon coming down in a housing area. Of course that may have happened more than once. I did live in ABQ for about 8 years.

(8,308 posts)Though I also recall that all the "cool" kids went to Highland. We used to cruise the drive-ins, Mac's, Frank's and Bob's Big Boy. Gosh, we may have crossed paths somewhere back then.

(15,804 posts)then transferred to Sandia when parents bought a new house. Yes, we cruised Mac's, Frank's, and I think it was Vip's Big Boy. There was also Peter Pan's, where a large root beer came in a cone-shaped container that, once empty, could be used as a megaphone at games. My reunion trips always included a visit to Mac's for taquitos and guacamole. One of my local besties was at the old Pius high school when I was at Sandia, another at Del Norte, small world. Surprised to learn that Janet Napolitano is a Sandia alum.

(8,308 posts)It was Vip's. And taquitos! I so miss those. I've tried a few frozen varieties from stores but none that were as good.
I haven't been back now for 30 some years. Everyone I knew there is gone. I used to live on Mary Ellen St. That's the only address I can recall now, though there were a few others. Hey, this has been fun.
