olive garden

i vaguely remember there was some running joke about the olive garden here in the lounge.

but that's beside the point.

i just saw a friend share a post on fb saying olive garden is "funding trump's re-election in 2020. it would be terrible if you shared this and olive garden lost business."

yes, it would be terrible because it's not true.

from snopes:

"Corporations are prohibited from making contributions to candidates and their committees, so corporate-related donations typically come from a “[company’s] PACs, their individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals’ immediate family members.”

"Olive Garden’s parent company is Darden, a corporation that also owns several other chain restaurant brands, including LongHorn Steakhouse, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, Yard House, The Capital Grille, Seasons 52, Bahama Breeze, and Eddie V’s.

"Open Secrets, a website operated by the Center for Responsive Politics that tracks “money in U.S. politics and its effect on elections and public policy” bears out Olive Garden’s claim, showing no Darden-related donations to President Trump’s campaign for the 2020 election cycle to date.

"For the previous election cycle, as Open Secrets observed, “all contributions to candidates from Darden Restaurants came from individuals,” and contributions to Donald Trump from those individuals totaled a paltry $886 in 2016 and $250 in 2018, hardly enough to merit a claim that the company was “funding” Trump’s election or re-election. (Hillary Clinton received nearly ten times as much in Darden-related campaign contributions in 2016 than Donald Trump did.)"

just thought i'd let you know.

also, what *was* that business about olive garden? (i honestly don't remember)

Yes, I realize they’re to Italian food what Panda Express is to Chinese but the food is tasty and reasonably priced.

Olive Garden is an affordable luxury for special family events in my world. It is also a comfortable place, non intimidating, for those of us raised on less.

The wife and I are comfortable now, but when we were growing up in our respective households, there were lean times for both of us. My mom was single parent, so for us a "fancy" meal was a trip to York Steakhouse. So, I never did get into fine dining. For us that's Olive Garden or Red Lobster.

Conservative suckers pay cash for expensive symbolism.

In the Kerry/Bush election, the right wingers had this conservative ketchup so they would be protesting Heinz ketchup, which they thought was enriching Kerry’s wife. She had sold her part of Heinz. The conservative ketchup was very expensive and then you had to pay shipping, which was not cheap either. I emailed one of the companies wondering if they had actually bought or leased a factory to make a short-term fad product. They contracted it out to a gourmet ketchup company ---- in California.

The conservative sheeple were buying overpriced ketchup from Liberalfornia to protest something that was not happening.

I wished them well in their endeavors. They found a niche market to make a good buck off the easily led.

Funny thing - Heinz Corp was primarily supporting republicans.

Where I live the soil is extremely alkaline.

Maybe I should grow olives instead of constantly adding iron to my soil!!!

and one or two of their noodle dishes. So it's a place I can go to with meat eaters that is pretty easy when I am not near my home. Although in my neighborhood here in Chicago there are a lot of better local places that do omnivore and vegan foods for a similar cost.

Panda Express has chicken broth in all of their food.

I am glad to hear Olive Garden isn't supporting trump.
