(7,113 posts)I first caught a few episodes on the local PBS channel's afternoon Brit programming block on days off from work. Then I rented a few DVDs from Netflix to catch episodes I missed. By then I fell totally in love with the characters -- Miss Lane, Queenie, Young Alf Arless, and the like -- so I decided just to buy the complete series (Used but "Like New" from amazon.com.
The show was a big hit in the UK, and there was an uproar when it was inexplicably canceled mid-season. I'm guessing the reason was the actor (Brendan Coyle) playing the father, Robert Timmins, had been hired to play John Bates in "Downton Abbey."
I hope you enjoy the series as much as I do.

(118,749 posts)worked out west. He was a total NDPer, I was a Liberal. He was hired to build the foundation of the tea house. We sat across from each other and talked politics for hours. That was a fun summer job. I regretted very much that I had to then go back to high school which I hated.

(29,098 posts)I loved it. When you are through with Larkrise look for Wind At My Back which is out of Canada. Its another family saga about life in small town in the thirties. I loved that one too. That should keep you busy till Downtown returns. You have seen Cranford already haven,t you?

(29,098 posts)It's the story of primarily the women in an English town in the early 1800. It stars Judi Dench who is magnificent. The first episode took a great deal of attention as the accents and period language required your focus...but after that it was very easy to slip into that world. It's a relatively short Masterpiece series. My daughter and I LOVED it and would have enjoyed seeing more...Big Recommend if you liked Larkrise..you will appreciate Cranford.

(29,098 posts)It was on the CBC I believe and ran as a regular series for a few years. Much like a Canadian version of the Walton's but better because it's. You know..... Canadian. Lol
I really enjoyed the characters and the historical reference. Not knowing much about Canada I found it not just entertaining but informative as well
