So I saw Mean Mary James in concert tonight -- WOW! What a talent.

She was a child prodigy who could read music before she could read words. She made her first album at age 6; now she plays 11 instruments and is based in Nashville but plays all kinds of music. She has an amazing vocal range and at times reminds of of Joan Baez or Cher, except she writes most of her songs too. Her fast banjo is second to none. In this award-winning song about a woman on horseback trying to outrun a train, she even makes the banjo sound like a running horse as it reaches the peak.

She plays everything from Celtic fiddle to blues guitar, and many of her songs tell a story.

She also survived a tragic accident that nearly killed her and paralyzed a vocal cord, but she kept singing until it healed.
