I think three large cans of Steel Reserve 211 ought to put my attitude right.

(12,272 posts)I was so tempted to buy all sorts of stuff I had never seen before in our state owned liquor stores.
What really tempted me was a free standing display of Mike's Hard Punch, it comes in purple, foil boxes and I thought it would taste like grape Kool-ade.
Then I got over my brief enchantment, because I knew, one sip and that box was just going to sit and go bad while Mr. gut rolled his eyes at me.
We have wine and some vodka if we want a drink, so no thank you, but I hope you enjoy your beer.

(6,261 posts)This is confusing, but a 1 litre bottle of Svedka Vodka went for about $15.95 total at the state liquor store. At QFC today, that same bottle is listed as $15.95, but on sale for $12.95. Taking it to the counter, the register first adds the 17.5% liquor tax to the original price of $15.95, i.e. $2.79, and then adds the sales tax of almost 9%, i.e. another $1.43 for a total of $17.17.
Woohoo, liquor privatisation! We greatly reduced selection, put 1200 people out of well-paying government jobs with benefits and pensions and have increased liquor prices as an additional bonus! Cui bono here? Not the voters! I think the 17.5% should be included in the price tag on the shelf, and not added at the checkout register.

(12,272 posts)I wonder if they have to do it that way. If so, there should be a big, orange sign next to the price tag. It was Costco that pushed for the change, I sure hope the state stores don't close though. Maybe the price advantage will keep them open.

(50,560 posts)The liquor initiative I-1183 closed (or caused to be sold to private parties) all the state-run liquor stores in Washington, plus the state liquor warehouse. Further, if you want to sell hard liquor in Washington you must have a store that's at least 10,000 square feet (this so the anti-1183 people couldn't say it was going to be sold at gas stations, but it basically precludes people opening liquor specialty stores) unless it was already a liquor store, and it must have had a beer and/or wine license for a certain period of time.
Basically, a liquor system by Costco for Costco.

(6,795 posts)I buy Smirnoff Cirtrus here in AZ for $9.99 on sale at CVS.
Don't know about taxes, but am sure it's not as much as you paid!!!!

(6,261 posts)I'm retired and we spend our winters in Tucson, so I well know the prices you speak of. Yes, we stock up on our way home, but we love Seattle 9 months out of 12, so it's still worth it.
I think we've always had the highest prices in the lower 48, though. The 1.75 litre Smirnoff retails for $19.95 in Arizona and Mass, for $16 in New Hampshire and for $32 here.
I blame the intercoursing Scandinavians myself.

(6,795 posts)plus tax, of course
$16 in NH? holy crap.....that's a deal!
I'd pay the $32 just to live in Seattle and eat that awesome fish!

(12,272 posts)That was my impulse, so I stopped to look at it and that is when I realized that we really wouldn't drink it. I had tried Mike's Hard Lemonade before and it was just so so, I am just not a mixed drink sort and Mr. gut will sometimes mix vodka with a So-be juice, but a big box of 8% Kool-ade, nope, he would get a good laugh at me though.
