Any arborists?

I have a bush that has taken its sweet time to grow solid base branches that would help it fill in. I sacrificed quite a few branches on one side to cut out the signs of disease. But, now that it looks like it has healed enough to start growing solid secondary branches, I notice that the first promising base branch is going to eventually create a criss-cross with the main branch (which is growing in the other direction). I know that none of this is ideal, but I have waited three years to get to this point and I don't want to go backwards.

Any suggestions to fix what is eventually going to be two branches that will rub against each other? I'm thinking of bonsai methods. Maybe there is another tool in the box besides wire?
