He came up with calling it "Greenland" to scam potential settlers to relocate even though very little of the island was green. The settlers tried but it didn't last and I'm sure the natives who were well-adapted to living on the island probably shed tears of joy as the last of the vikings sailed away.
The Vikings had a traveling bone, as some people say, and they couldn't stay put. Leif Erickson (son of Eric The Red) and some of them found what is Newfoundland in modern Canada and established a settlement there at a place named L'Anse Aux Meadows (Las Vegas means "the meadows" in Spanish) and perhaps another at a place called Point Rosee. It seems that the natives/indigenous people were not very friendly but the Vikings did establish the first settlements, if only short-lived, in North America, beating Columbus and his Spaniards by around 500 years. If you don't think that the Caribbean is adjacent to North America, look at a map.
