I hope it's not like my past supervisor/management experience, in which my loyalty to a local "lord" was more important than anything else.

I personally don't think society has changed very much since the days of serfs, vassals and lords -- some people are given more to help secure the dictator at the top. He/she can't do it alone, so a few allies are secured through extra compensation compared to the working peons.
