The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm pretty sure that Ari on MSNBC is pronouncing Frank Pentangeli incorrectly.
He is pronouncing it PEN-tan-jelly.
I've always pronounced it PenTANjelly, while distorting the jelly part a little, like jeely kind of, but not quite. I'm of Italian descent, and that's how I say it, and I thought that is the way they say it in the Godfather movie, but I could be wrong. I'm too lazy to find a clip that pronounces his name.
So if someone gets a bug up their ass about this, like me, and looks it up, don't get all excited and proud and come in this thread telling me I'm wrong, because I really don't want to know. I have enough problems.

(115,735 posts)It means "five angels," and since the word "angeli" (angels) is pronounced AN-jelly, it stands to reason that the name would be pronounced as you said, not PEN-tan-jelly because then the emphasis would be on the wrong syllable in "angeli." But I am not an Italian and I don't play one on TV.
