One of the world's most beautiful subway systems was illegal to photograph until last year — take a look inside

-The subway in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, is glorious. But was also designated as a nuclear bomb shelter and photography was made illegal on national-security grounds.

-The ban was lifted in 2018, allowing photographers to showcase its chandeliers, marbles, and memorials of Uzbekistan's Soviet past.

The subway system in Uzbekistan's capital city is one of the world's most beautiful metro systems, but it was illegal to photograph until late last year. Tashkent's subway system was designated as a nuclear bomb shelter, and it was considered too strategically important for photos of it to be shared widely.

But with the ban newly lifted, we can see inside the system filled with art, sculpture, and vibrant colors as it serves the city's 2.4 million people. It's filled with chandeliers, marble, and art that celebrates everything from the Soviet Union's role in space exploration to Uzbekistan's modern industries.

Here's what the subway looks like:

"Palace of Prince Romanov, Tashkent This is a one-storey private residence of Nikolai Konstantinovich Romanov, who was a grandson of Emperor Nicholai I, and who was exiled by his royal parents to Tashkent in 1877 to live there until his death in 1918."

with his "Uzbeki-beki-beki-stan" comment.

I like the Uzbeki system design best of all subway designs I've ever seen. Truly lovely architecture...and the tiles!

It's worse than any I have seen in NYC during the late 70s (the bottom of the barrel from my experiences).

Way, way down. 2 or 3 escalators down. Way down there.

And....Tokyo Subways - crowded beyond belief. But the crowds are orderly. No pushing or shoving like other places.

So beautiful! Compare to NYC's subway which is pretty much disgusting and over-run with pizza rats, or even Boston, which is slightly better than NY, but still pretty shabby.

Why would these subways be illegal to photograph when they are so stunning? You would think they would be the pride and joy of these nations. They are works of art.
