Upstairs. At my computer, hottest room in the house. And I am cool due to my little blue fan, keeping me cool on two D batteries.
this was my brilliant idea and I found this perfect fan in my supermarket. It is sitting on my desk as I type and I feel fine.
We have central air but upstairs it just doesn't hack it. Glad I invested a few bucks in this fan or I wouldn't be typing this.

(21,794 posts)I use them for an O2Cool fan I keep at my desk. While one set of batteries runs the fan, another set is being charged/recharged.

(8,747 posts)Get NiMh batteries. Nickel Metal Hydride. Get 4 of them and a charger. Could run as much as $50.
They are 1.2 volts as opposed to 1.5 of alkalines, so your fan will run slower. You can't recharge alkalines.
You will have to do the math, if NiMh are for you.

(13,787 posts)Look at the chart that compares alkaline vs. NiMH discharge curves (voltage):

Especially under heavy loads, the NiMH cell's discharge curve is nearly flat, when compared to that of the alkaline cell.

Battery chargers are a little tougher to find - it mostly depends on what size batteries you use.
Your best bet would be an Energizer Recharge Universal Battery Charger, which can acccommodate a variety of battery sizes.
This is the one I use:

Yes, between the charger and the batteries it does cost $$ upfront, but then, you can use them again and again and that means fewer spent batteries going into the garbage after only 1 use. These things really pay for themselves within 1-2 years.
Good luck and good hunting.

(13,787 posts)They're rated at 2500 mah. That's typical capacity for an AA cell. A NiMH D cell should be at least 4 times that.
I suspect that Energizer is selling D cells with the guts of AA cells. In any case, they're quite the ripoff.
On edit:
Even if you don't mind the lower capacity of the AA cell in a D cell application, you can buy inexpensive adapters that allow you to use a real AA cell in place of the D cell. Much lower capacity, but could be useful in an pinch.
