HBO's "Deadwood"

I watched the first episode in hopes it was good.
What struck me was the amount of gratuitous cussing going on. It really makes the whole show seem juvenile to me.
I'll maybe give another episode a try but really disappointed in this series so far.

Rough and Tough times ... well-done in my opinion...The upcoming story lines and character development will be worth the effort to tolerate the cursing.. I thought it was fine.

3. You should read about the REAL history of Deadwood. The show only reflects the time

with no sugar-coating. If you stick with it, you will see one of the most incredible ensemble casts depicting that era of history with a realism that, granted, is startling compared to the usual sanitized "western".

There is a reason why fans of the show have never stopped demanding a final movie or set of movies after HBO's premature canceling--which came to pass this year after 13 years.

4. I think the intention was to show the extent to which people in the Old West used profanity.

Back then, profanities were largely based on religious blasphemy, rather than scatological or sexual terms. But the producers felt, rightly, I believe, that such expressions as "God's Blood!", "God's Wounds!", "What in tarnation?!" and others would just sound comical to the modern ear.

So they used modern profanities instead.

5. The dialogue of Deadwood makes swearing lyrical.

The use of "cocksucker" in particular in the opening was high art.
