Reality vertigo, and suddenly we're parents of the bride

Last week, finally settling into our vacation cooking and enjoying the peaceful sunset at Truro, Massachusetts:
[IMG][/IMG]

Then an interruption. Now, the last time I interrupted our Cape Cod vacation was because I got an email from the White House saying "please respond immediately if you would like to meet with President Obama for an hour in Washington this Friday." (That was in 2012, and, DUH, yes I did)

Otherwise, we do NOT leave the tranquility of the Outer Cape for ANYTHING. I get enough stress during the other 11 months of the year. But when our daughter has a marriage scheduled, even if it's only the civil ceremony (the big one comes next month in Germany), we would go to anywhere--luckily, it was only as far as New York City.

Posing just before:

Taking their vows:

And suddenly, newlyweds!
[IMG][/IMG]

Some sour-faced woman poked her head out the door just as I was taking the shot, but while she may have spoiled the photo, she couldn't spoil the moment. Family and friends were then led to a spot at the tip of Manhattan with an outdoor brunch overlooking the harbor, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.

Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da, la la la la life goes on!

Are their names Desmond and Molly Jones, perchance?

All the best and congrats. You've got a very healthy perspective on life!

Though they now live in NYC and plan to continue to live there, they are both foreign-born. Our daughter has an English-sounding name, and no longer has a detectable German accent, but her mom (my wife) is German, she grew up in Germany, and her native language remains German. She has U.S. and German citizenship. Her husband is a Russian-born Catholic who lived for many years in Israel (mom married there). He still speaks with a Russian accent (has a green card, so though not yet a citizen, ICE leaves him alone).

He is giving up his Russian family name and taking OUR name. (!!!)

His American step-dad is a lawyer who has argued several times before the Supreme Court. During lunch, I got to hear (and get confirmation) about how many of the justices are/were. Rhenquist was an asshole, Scalia was a very smart asshole, O'Connor was wishy-washy, Thomas has nothing to say, etc. Quite a day all around.

My son's best friend is Russian and knows many there. Both she and my son live in NYC, so perhaps they'll meet one day.

Milestones that make you blink real hard are the best.
I bet the interloper can be photoshopped out pretty easily.

Yesterday morning, we had a last breakfast together in New York City. It is rare these days that the four of us are in the same place at the same time.
[IMG][/IMG]

Now, 24 hours later, my wife and I are back for the rest of our vacation on Cape Cod. Our newlywed daughter is back at her job in lower Manhattan, and the younger one is back at her job in Frankfurt am Main in Germany.

Plus ça change, as the French say............
