landed on the moon? I was in the Army at Camp May near Regan Germany. We had a party for us and the local villagers. The Germans brought food and barrels of beer.
We entertained the kids driving them around the post on APCs and the jeep. The Germans had pony rides for the kids. It was a fun day for all.

(18,634 posts)My dad rented a color TV especially for the moon landing.
He was disappointed that it was all in black and white.

(31,518 posts)watched the news every day for updates. It was just unbelievable and exciting to think that men were really going to walk on the moon.
I had been fascinated by the space program since I was a kid and we got little plastic replicas of Nike missiles in boxes of Grape Nuts Flakes cereal (which I loved because they sponsored the Roy Rogers Show).
When Russia launched Sputnik, the local tv stations would tell what dates and times that it would pass overhead and we would watch the skies to see if we could pick that little twinkling moving light from the background of stars.

(12,586 posts)Everyone sat on the floor of the gym and watched the images on an old black-and-white television. Even sitting on the front row the images from the Moon were barely comprehensible.
While the original videos of the first landing on the moon were lost -- most likely erased so something else could be recorded on the tape -- there were enough copies available that one could be enhanced using modern technology to produce this clearer video:
The first moon landing was more than a once-in-a-lifetime event; it was a once in the history of mankind event. I'm glad I got to witness it in real time.

(1,369 posts)6 week French immersion study program, sponsored by the govt. for French teachers. We had to pledge at the beginning of the course to only speak French while on campus. Our French instructors were as excited as we were to watch the astronauts and hear the call from President Nixon. Lots of champagne and wine to celebrate the event!!!
