Cicadas are sort of stupid

I took out the garbage tonight

A cicada noisily flew in to my house as I came back inside

So, trying to be a good enivironmental citizen, I carefully captured it, walked out to the edge of my deck, and flung it into the summer darkness

Then I turned back and opened the door

Bzzzzzzt! It passed me as loudly as an old biplane and beat me into my own kitchen

Any living thing has to have sustenance. It cannot live on air.


Cicadas “eat” / drink something called xylem (sap), which is a watery tree fluid containing amino acids and minerals. Cicadas drink rather than eat.

The nymphs eat constantly as they pupate; it's the adult form I thought didn't eat at all, and just has sex until it starves to death.
