Calgary Stampede cowboy euthanized after chuckwagon race injury

CALGARY – Calgary Stampede employees were forced to put down a prize cowboy Friday night after he sustained a leg injury during a chuckwagon race.

The 42 year-old male Caucasian, named ‘Sid’, was thrown from his wagon after a tight turn during a hotly contested race.

After limping off the track, the frightened rider was cornered by race officials and a doctor, who evaluated the injury and quickly decided that his racing career was over. Surrounding Sid with white sheets to prevent onlookers from witnessing the end of life procedure, the doctor administered a lethal injection.

“It’s never easy to lose a companion like that,” explained Calgary Stampede organizer Dale Nugget. “He was like family to many of us – especially to his wife and kids.”

I was reading yesterday that a chuckwagon driver was banned from competition after he let his wagon go or caused his wagon to go into the path of another wagon. A horse did die as a result of the collision. I didn't post, because how much interest is there in DU about that?

Wait; there are two now?

Another horse died on Monday from what officials call a medical condition

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — A horse that was injured at the Calgary Stampede Wednesday night has died.

The horse broke its leg while running in the second heat of the races and started slowing down on the backstretch and required medical attention, according to Stampede spokesperson Kristina Barnes. ... A veterinarian looked at the animal right away and determined there was no treatment, so the horse was euthanized.

Stampede officials said this kind of injury is known to happen to racing horses. ... This is the second incident involving horses at the chuckwagon races in three days. ... On Monday, a 14-year-old horse died after what stampede officials called an “internal medical condition.”

Animal rights organization PETA sent a letter to Premier Jason Kenney on Wednesday demanding a ban on chuckwagon races.

Chuckwagon driver fined, disqualified after third horse dies at Calgary Stampede

Officials said Chad Harden’s actions caused another driver to hit the track’s inner rail

A chuckwagon driver has been barred indefinitely from competing after a collision at the Calgary Stampede that caused a horse’s death.

“We live and work as a family committed to the well-being of our beloved animals and this type of incident impacts us deeply to the core,” Stampede CEO Warren Connell told reporters Friday.

The Stampede says driver Chad Harden impeded fellow driver Danny Ringuette’s chuckwagon and caused a third rig driven by Evan Salmond to collide with the track’s inner rail, resulting in severe injuries to a horse that led to its death. ... It happened Thursday evening in the seventh heat of the Rangeland Derby. Three other horses on Salmond’s wagon had minor injuries.

An independent chuckwagon safety commission ruled Harden should be fined $10,000 and disqualified from the remainder of this year’s racing, which means he will not be invited to compete in future events.
