After a few days in Oaxaca we took a bus to Puerto Angel , a small
town on the Pacific. I was digging every minute. From there we took a bus to Chetumal,
a town on the Caribbean right on the northern border of Belize.
The bus went south to Orange Walk Town. This was once British Honduras.
The next stop was our destination, Belize City. Our room was in an old two story
wood hotel with louvered shutters and a slow ceiling fan. By then my girlfriend
had developed dysentery. Since I drank only beer I was OK. I hit a few local
places, kids outside selling weed. The main hangout was a place called Mom's,
where the expats and Europeans went.
The dream of buying land became secondary to the needs of my girlfriend.
So we bought tickets to New Orleans with our land money.
We landed late, but went to Bourbon Street anyway. I had never been to New Orleans.
Over a dozen rides hitching home to Arizona.

cause I need someone to talk to. My sweetheart went into the bed and
I had to stay awake and listen to the guys stuff before he dropped us off
at the Triple T outside Tucson.

(23,356 posts)I took my 13 year old son to Belize last summer for two weeks. What a beautiful country full of wonderful people. The poverty was staggering in some areas.... I remember Orange a Walk very well. I met a local who was raised there who told me the town was called Orange Walk because the kids had to walk through Orange groves to get to the bus stop for school...I dont know if thats accurate but thats what he told me. There was a great gallery full of local art and hand crafts there as I recall. I got a tummy bug for a couple days durning my trip as well. Probably from water or local lettuce...it wasnt fun. Its best to stick with beans and rice I found out.
