Pretty disgusted with the County Animal Control right now. Cute pup showed up at the house this morning. I spent part of the morning putting up flyers and talking to the local vets, feed store, shelters etc. Called the Sheriff's Dept. to see if anybody had lost her in a car wreck off of I-10 as she wasn't in the usual areas where assholes normally dump pets. They sent a message over to Animal Control and the officer I talked to said a deputy knew who the dog belonged to based on description - somebody in the same little hamlet the Deputy lives in. She was happy to meet me at the end of the road to get the dog back to the owners.
When she got there she said it was not the missing dog but she would take it in. We said well we want it if it isn't theirs and we would be happy to keep it and keep looking for the owners. Nope. Had to take it in and hold for 3 days then we can adopt. WTFingF????!!!! Asked what would happen if we refused to turn it over and got threatened with having a deputy called out. I have no problem adopting it but why couldn't it stay with us? Poor little thing was scared and had been out at least a couple days in the heat. I'm just in tears over that poor little thing getting stuffed into a cage in the back of the dog catcher's truck.
If I had known that was going to happen I NEVER would have talked to her in the first place. I thought the stereotype of the mean dogcatcher was just that - stereotype. ugh!

(13,364 posts)I get all worked up about animals...
I guess the policy is to make sure the dog isn't sick or carrying something....but I'd for sure call the shelter asap and make sure they know you'd adopt if the dog isn't picked up. I'd hate for them to "accidentally" euthanize the poor baby!
thank you for being a good samaritan

(9,696 posts)Maybe you can talk to someone higher up in the chain and see about springing the pup sooner.
Good Luck!

(55,025 posts)one thing to give a pup you are falling for back to a lost owner, but watching it get shoved into a cage for no fucking reason sucks.

(9,313 posts)I would check daily to make sure they don't get "mixed up" and put her to sleep.

(55,025 posts)I know she will probably be OK but she would have been a hell of a lot better staying with us. Poor thing.

(23,765 posts)If you hadnt called them, they wouldnt have had any say whether you adopted it or not. Their rational is stupid. I agree you should talk to whomever is in charge.
Thanks for caring.

(55,025 posts)usually find lost dogs owners pretty fast, and most of the abandoned ones have ended up staying here if I couldn't find a home so why bother with those jerks again?

(63,221 posts)you and the poor little pup. I really wish you both all the best and I hope the pup ends up with you. I'm so sorry he/she has to endure 3 days cooped up in a hot cage. Please let us know how things pan out. I'm hoping for a happy ending!

(22,574 posts)Any message to get lost. Either call or, better, go to the shelter and fill out the adoption form NOW. If the shelter gets too full, puppy could be euthanized after 3 days unless they know there's interest. I've seen horrible mistakes happen, resulting in a dog being killed. I hope this shelter does a spay/neuter before release. It's usually a savings for you. Also, hope they do a heartworm test. Don't forget vaccinations, esp. For parvo.

(55,025 posts)next county over prefers finders to keep the animal if they can until owner is found. they can't handle all the ones they have. I am pretty sure this is just about money.

(206,099 posts)And your presence could also help comfort the dog. Quite a few years back, I was feeding a cat - turned out the owner had moved and this poor thing got away from them. The weather got bad and I still couldn't get the cat to come to me, so I borrowed a "have-a-heart" trap from a local animal hospital so I could bring her (turned out she was a spayed female) in. But the rule there was they needed to keep her for 5 days, just in case the owner came forward - which I knew was not going to happen. And I'd been told that this was the only clinic in the area that could put down a healthy animal. So I showed up every day for a visit and brought my own food for the cat just to make sure they knew my intentions. Bless you, my friend, for rescuing this pup!

(7,675 posts)If you were willing to give this little girl a home, they should have accepted your offer. Even if she's been microchipped, she could have stayed with you until they found the rightful owners.
I would go to the shelter everyday to check up on her if it is possible for you to do so.
Good luck, Kali. I hope she gets to come home with you!

(25,816 posts)My 40 acres (less now) is next to BLM land and there is a large cattle pond.
People thought that if they dumped their pets near the pond that was OK.
The same went for people smugglers back in the day. More people have
moved nearby and that stuff is over now.
Go put a reservation on that pup. I'll bet it liked you.
I told Jeannie that I wanted a puppy. She said "You're 68. Are you gonna outlive that dog?"
She has a point. And three cats.

(55,025 posts)we ended up with a big old hound mix a year and a half ago. poor guy was out there for a couple weeks before the neighbor picked him up. I had seen his tracks but never saw him. he is a big old sweetheart. (though he eats like a horse!)
go get an adult dog. there are so many, I can't even look at the pictures - I start imagining what happened to the poor things and can't handle it.

(5,183 posts)My dimwit neighbor called animal control on a poor dog in the neighborhood which they had been feeding and calling it their dog.
I wanted to keep her in my yard but my neighbors balked and wanted her as a free roamer. Her original owner was an asshole who kept her tied up and would whip her. My neighbors told me they could hear her crying loudly from beatings. Asshole finally got sick, went to a nursing home after he set her loose and burned down his house. This poor dog lived in the woods for awhile, coming out to find food from the neighbors.
The neighbors called her "Community dog".
After years of free roaming, the dimwit neighbor got tired of her hanging around and called the county control. Luckily I was home the day I saw the truck, knew what was coming down, and ran up there to try to save her.
The officer said it was policy, and if I wanted her, to go to the shelter and to file the official request to adopt , but the 3 days of quarantine holding was mandatory.
I did just that. She had to be treated for heart worms at the shelter, which I paid for.
She went on to live a wonderful long life as a house-dog with my other critters and me.
I was glad I did the official adoption papers so that "community dog" could officially and finally have a responsible person and home.
Nicky lived with me for another 10 years, traveled and lived out west for a couple of years. We all returned to the same home.
She lived to 17.

(55,025 posts)and I now have a permanent ax to grind with that dept. In general I get along with local law enforcement (hell of lot better than Border Patrol) but this was pretty inflexible and unreasonable. I will be contacting my county supervisor.

(5,183 posts)I travel for my job, live on a huge property and it was by chance I saw animal control go to the neighbors. Thats when I ran up there and wanted to just take the dog but the control officer told me the procedures necessary to adopt since the dimwit reported her as a stray. I had to spend my weekend off filling out forms at animal control. Over the years I have rescued a total of four throw always from the dimwit. Including Nicky from my post above. I still have a kitty leftover from dimwit, she is also 17 and a great princess.
I could not save them all.
But dimwit went on to turn in all of her animals as strays. Dimwit has recently passed away and so the next door throw away pet deluge has stopped. I could not believe what she would do at times. She even declawed a beautiful Persian cat named Cody, and when she didnt want him anymore, she banished him, defenseless, to the outside. Poor kitty knew he was doomed. She also turned him in as a stray.

I have fantasies of calling them up and saying someone responded to one of your fliers and you've found the owner.
I know, I know...

(55,025 posts)Thursday I talked to the guy that runs the shelter and was told I could put money down for her adoption on Saturday since they are closed Sunday and Monday and that would put me first in line to get her. She won't be released until she is spayed either this week or next, but I went today in person to pay (it is 30-35 miles away) and got to see her. She is doing pretty well considering and was not afraid of the guy at all, so I think she will be OK. Of course she would be WAY better here, but she looked healthy and not near as lethargic as the 8 hours we had her...being me I asked about her poop and was reassured all was well.
I contacted my county supervisor and expressed my concern about how the AC officer was presenting the face of the county to its citizens and I know she will follow up as I intended when I chose that avenue to deal with the person.
here is a kind of crappy pic my son grabbed the day we found her -

(9,842 posts)for 3 days to allow the owners a chance to reclaim. If you happen to find an animal, you are supposed to turn it in to AC so that they can scan it for a chip and post a picture of it on their website in an effort to reunite the animal with its owner. I have seen many posts on social media by people who have found a dog or cat that they are trying to rehome so they don't have to take it to the pound. Social media is great for helping lost pets get back home, but it is also used by scumbags who run dogfighting operations and who are always on the lookout for free animals to use as bait. There are also snake breeders who collect baby kittens to use as snake food.
I am glad to read that you adopted this baby and hope you have a long and happy life together. She is a sweetheart.
