National chain, Popeyes hands down.
Other local Atlanta-area favorites:
1. Buckners - Jackson, GA
2. Table & Main - Roswell, GA. Nationally-recognized award-winning.
When Sylvias had an Atlanta location,
I tried it and it was ok.
Another now-closed Roswell restaurant,
Greenwoods, served it with a honey-pepper glaze. Delish!

(55,014 posts)I actually LIKE KFC original - same, good when hot and fresh (most of their sides suck, though)
Churches has too much grease, even for me. I don't know any other big chains.
but for me the test is how the chicken is cold as leftovers and the best I have found is a Tucson chain called Lucky Wishbone.

(22,264 posts)We call it Chicken Boulevard. It is so bad that when Popeye's built a new place and their old one went up for lease, it was taken over by a Church's.

(29,251 posts)I was recently flown down to New Orleans to be a judge at the National Fried Chicken Festival. (I know, I know, being a food editor is such a tough, awful life.) All the judgesvarious media folks and fried chicken stanswere seated at picnic tables in Woldenberg Riverfront Park. Tray after tray of fried chicken was presented to us to taste and evaluate. There were a few categories to score, such as tenderness, overall presentation, crunchiness, and juiciness. We didnt know the restaurant that made each dish, but we did know that our votes would help crown the winner. This was serious work.

(43,867 posts)Ive eaten pretty good vegan meat, including tofu chili - best ever. But
I think a caveat is fried chicken is
usually thought of as being on the bone.
Nuggets, tenders, etc. dont really fit whats generally though of as fried chicken.
But if a vegan dish won the prize Id
like to try it.

(12,858 posts)It was rotisserie chicken!! (1st time I'd ever seen that!)
I was stunned--to me, and to most people I've told this to, American chicken is fried chicken!!

(5,477 posts)Popeye's is pretty darn good.
Locally in the Seattle area we had Ezell's (Oprah discovered it when she was here one time, and used to have it FedEx'ed to Chicago). Ezell lost his legal use of the name to other family members, and the chicken from the new incarnations isn't a good, but Ezell opened another place called 'Heaven Sent' and it's still his original, kick-ass recipe. Amazing stuff!

(12,504 posts)They are all over the island everywhere in Puerto Rico. There's got to be hundreds of them.
There chicken struck me as just plain bland tasting.
The up and coming favorite there is Popeye's, but they are few and far between right now.

(43,867 posts)I ate Churches often growing up but theyre not a favorite.
They were owned by the same
company as Popeyes. Churches kinda reminds me of a milder Bojangles.

(12,504 posts)When they invented extra crispy, as you can imagine, we were over the moon with joy because now we 2 varieties of chicken to choose from.
Then just one Popeye's Chicken snuck into the city years ago right next to Fenway Park. And, of course, that led to the great "Boston Red Sox Popeye's Chicken and Beer" scandal that rocked the city, Red Sox management, and led to Popeye's moving out to the suburbs where they are expanding.

We obviously don't possess the southern tradition of making might fine fried chicken like I enjoyed in Louisiana years ago.

(36,444 posts)I missed Obama when we were at the Pico blvd location, but Charlie Sheen strolled in with his entourage. He swerved away from his party and came over to our table to ask my son about his 'stylish' penguin sweater. My son started laughing and told him how he scored it in a thrift store. They talked and laughed a bit more, took a photograph (Charlie wearing his fedora, my son with his thrift store sweater), then he rejoined his party.
I thought it was fun, but I got more excited when we exited and I discovered Charlie Sheen's bulletproof black Maybach parked outside.

(5,520 posts)National chain-Popeye's
Here in Houston, they all seem to have problems filling an order correctly. The Popeye's on the naval station in Sasebo, Japan never had that problem.
Local Houston-Frenchy's
Only the original location, though. They tried to expand a bit too fast and the quality suffered.
Other-Stroud's in Kansas City/Riverside.
wyldwolf
(43,867 posts)They don't unlock their doors when it's time, the give "spicy" when "mild" is requested, they ignore customers at the counter, and they just get orders wrong. To go? Check it before you leave. All this is a management problem.
The two other locations are extraordinary with their service.
wyldwolf
(43,867 posts)First order came out a little warmer than room temperature and soggy.
Management replaced order with freshly cooked. Not a vast improvement. Rather bland.

(17,863 posts)than Popeyes which is the gold standard. Of course our local Hy-Vee appears to no longer be able to get the spicy fried chicken.
KFC is not horrible, but I prefer spicy chicken. Even the non-spicy Hy-Vee is better than KFC. It is definitely cheaper when you catch it on special (which happens often).
Popeyes can be hit or miss - sometimes it is too dry (been under the heat lamp too long I think). At Hy-Vee we can request that they drop an order and pick up fresh chicken 20 minutes later.

(15,805 posts)...many years ago, there was a restaurant on the east side of Sandia Peak, popular place where you often had to wait a while for a table. Bella Vista, maybe?? (It was back in the 1960s, sorry for the memory fail). Anyway, their fried chicken was the draw, and it was superb. It brought all the drools!

I enjoy Canes chicken fingers, but I agree with a previous poster that "Fried Chicken" Means on the bone chicken.
Locally, there are some great options around St Louis - But unfortunately, Sweetie Pies is not on the list.
Hey, don't look at me like that. It's good, just not great, and the green beans and Mac & Cheese were average.
Lee's Fried Chicken is great if you're in a good franchise. There is a LOT of difference in quality depending on location.
Locally famous family restaurant "The Good Ol' Days" in New Baden is really good, but a bit salty and the sides are average... Their Pie is phenomenal though, so it's worth a trip up I64

The absolute best fried chicken around here in the corn fields of SW Illinois is at the restaurant in the Original Springs Hotel. Perfect crunch, juicy meat, just the right level of salt and black pepper in the old school crust.

Super obscure bonus recommendation - The Eagles Nest in Addieville Illinois has the absolute best butter milk soaked fried gizzards in the whole world.
It's in a town of 200 or so a good 10 minute drive past the ass end of nowhere. Worth it. So delicious.
