2. Is this evidence that dogs have predictive imagination?

Able to foresee potential outcomes in situations? And that they have feelings of caring to act on their "worries"? We (humans) don't typically give credit to animals for having much of a thought process around memories. But there it is in action in this video.

My rottie mix demonstrated that a few years ago. It was winter time, and I went out cross country skiing while she got to hike through the snow and explore. The trail followed a river and was, at times, directly over the water. She went to investigate a spot where the ice had thawed and she could see the rushing water underneath. Well, the ice was thin where she was standing and she fell through. Of course she couldn't get out because the water was pushing hard against her and she couldn't grip the ice. I had to rescue her. Two days later, we went along the same route. In a completely different spot there was some thin ice, and she balked at it. She remembered what had happened previously. She understood that there was rushing water underneath and she could fall through the ice and be trapped.

9. Rotties are such smart dogs! My sister had one years before they got the dog they had now and

she was my favorite dog ever! Her name was Ruby and she was so protective of my sister's kids and of me for some reason. She was a sweet dog if you were part of her tribe if she liked you, but if she didn't or if she thought you were a threat she was a very intimidating guard dog.

When I used to visit them, she would sleep on my bed and my sister's husband's friends would get drunk and come into my room and try to get me to come back out to party with them and she would growl at them until they would go away. One guy would not go away and she sunk her teeth into him and he had to go get stitches. He was pretty wasted so he wasn't really feeling any pain, but she was the same way with anyone who would approach the kids that she didn't like or trust.

She was the sweetest, most cuddly dog with us, but god help you if you were not on her good side!

11. Ellie loves everyone. I can't imagine her biting another dog or a person

She just gets super jealous when we are at the park and I pet the other dogs. She will get in their faces and bark at them until they are cowering. One time I was petting a rottie puppy who was maybe 9 months old. He was a very nice little doggie. Well, Ellie couldn't stand it, so she barked and chased him away.

The other thing is that she has an extremely soft bite, which I guess comes from her lab side. Even as a puppy going through teething, she would never bite hard. I don't even know if she is capable! I mean, I kind of wonder how she can chew her food.

12. Ha ha! We used to call them "love bites" with Ruby!

It was like "I could rip your head off, but I won't because I love you, so here is just a little reminder of how gentle I can be!". She would wrap her jaw around our faces when we would snuggle with her (I know, sounds dumb and dangerous) but she would just gently embrace us and then let us go. She would do that with other body parts too. I don't know why we trusted her so much because she really could have done so much damage if she had wanted to, but she was always an angel with the people she loved.

She was also very jealous, especially of their other dog, Gus, the yellow Lab. He was kind of dumb, but happy-go-lucky and she would lie in doorways and not let him pass. It was kind of mean, but I could never be mad at her because she just had my heart wrapped around her little paw.

This is a little TMI, but he always used to try to hump me for some reason - occasionally other people - but mostly me and Ruby hated it so she would guard me and attack him if he came near me. He would wimper because she wouldn't let him near me and get so frustrated. It was kind of funny how they behaved with each other. Sorry to go on like this. I was just up there over the holiday and I am kind of reminiscing about the dogs. I guess I miss them .

14. Dog humping is all about dominance, so Ruby was probably getting after him for that

Either she thought you were higher up the chain of command, or you were hers and hers alone!

Only family members. If Gus or any other man came near me she would be very defensive. It was a little much, but I appreciated her protection, however misguided.

10. Some dogs are just the best nannies!

My sister has a Swiss Mountain Dog and she is so protective of their kids and any other kids that visit. They have a pool and she doesn't like the water - even though she hates the heat - but she will spend the day running around the pool making sure the kids are ok.

It's funny because she will always hone in on the youngest child and follow them around. She seems to instinctively know who the youngest one is. A few times she has fallen in the pool accidentally, which she doesn't like. She can swim to the shallow end and come up the steps, but she just doesn't like the water.

However, it is just so sweet to see how protective she is of the children. She is one of those breeds that needs a job. She is just such a sweet dog. I love her so much!
