Today, one of those five Elston Avenue pioneers, Takeshi Yashiro, serves as a top executive of a sprawling conglomerate that supplies much of the raw fish Americans eat. The Moon followers' seafood operation is driven by a commercial powerhouse, known as True World Group. It builds fleets of boats, runs dozens of distribution centers -- including in Los Angeles and San Francisco -- and supplies most of the nation's 9,000 sushi restaurants.

(9,267 posts)I think its a generational thing. My Millennial kids love the stuff. My five yo grandson (a pretty adventurous eater) likes it.
Lots of foods are like that. My Greatest Generation parents liked Italian food but would not eat Mexican or Chinese.

(12,504 posts)but I actually picked up that whole green ball of wasabi and popped it in my mouth thinking it was the coconut scallop thingy!
See the little sucker at the bottom of the plate disguising itself as something to pop in your mouth?
Well, just don't do it.

(7,317 posts)I don't eat sushi, but I don't dislike it. I'm sure I would like a lot of food I am unfamiliar with, but that's the problem. Give me a Thai menu and I wouldn't have a clue as to what I was ordering.
I like to know what I am eating. I would have to take a tutorial and a taste test before ordering sushi. That plate looks good, but I have no idea what any of that is called. Calling something a California Roll tells me nothing about what it contains. It's like calling something a hamburger. The name is uninformative.
Even though I know little about sushi, that tray looks expensive. It also looks like it's too much for one person. Is that a party tray?

(24,259 posts)How to make most of what we like the best at home using supplies bought online and from our local grocery mostly because the nearest place that carries decent Sushi is a bit over 30 minutes away and the one that carries excellent Sushi and variety is an hour and 20 minutes.

Oh, and my kids are millennials...so, I'm not some new-hippy youngster.
