Obviously, this is a question for all you Americans on DU. There is a big wide world beyond the borders of the States as we all well know. So, if you couldnt be American which country would you choose and why?

(16,386 posts)Of course, I haven't visited since 1979 when I was a pup, but I loved it there and felt so at home. The people were so friendly and easy-going. I'm afraid if I visit again it won't be the same.

When I saw Oz I though you were talking about Australia. They are such a right wing society, I got a little bit concerned.
People are so nice
I recently read an article about American retirees moving there.
I googled images of Chile and it's gorgeous.

(66,462 posts)It's such a beautiful country. I love the German language, German culture, German food, German music; I speak German, so no problem. Plus, it's centrally located, so visiting other countries is a snap on the rail system.

(34,137 posts)I've got family history in both places and they seem like lovely places to live - though a lot colder than Florida where I have lived all my life.
My great grandfather came from a little village outside of Aberyswyth, Wales. My great great grandfather (on a different branch) had a sawmill on Vancouver Island for a few years in the 1890s.
But I really plan to stay right where I am for the next thirty or so years.

Wales is beautiful. I've never felt more welcomed, in a foreign country, than I was in Wales. It's beautiful - especially in the north. It's where I want my ashes to be scattered.
Canada is also such a beautiful and welcoming country. I love the celebration of diversity.

(12,132 posts)Although I understand I probably wear my kilt here in Florida way more often than anyone in Scotland wears theirs. I do love to go out kilted though so being in Scotland would not diminish that. I also think Scotland would give me fairly easy access to Scandinavia and there are some great metal bands over there I want to see.

(33,544 posts)The country is absurdly beautiful and from my perspective, the French know how to live.
They smoke too much, and there is more than a modicum of racism in the country (but not as much as here, their President unlike ours is not an ignorant racist), but other than that, well, again, they live wisely and well.

(54,436 posts)I was born in the USA, grew up there, speak English as a native language, will always be American.
However, at age 22, I met a woman who changed my life. She came to visit the USA, and said it was nice, but her life was in Germany, where I was welcome to join her. I got a rather exotic job soon after that involved a LOT of travel. Most of it was in Europe, so it didn't matter. At age 60, I decided the commuting was enough, so I moved here permanently. Our daughters are "from" Germany, in that they were born here and grew up here. But one of them went to school in Hawaii for a while, and decided she was "kama 'aina." When asked where she was from, she said "the Big Island." Now she just says "everywhere," and lives near Frankfurt. The other one ended up finishing her schooling in New York City, and decided that was home for her. She loves the place. If you ask her where she is from, she might say "Düsseldorf" and she might say "New York City." It's where you hang your hat that matters, not where your birth certificate was issued (just ask Barack Obama).
