The job was in Nogales--A house on a hill overlooking the border.

About 1970. I was still a "hoddie", mixing mortar and wheelbarrowing
block. A split level place-- the garage was 12 feet lower than the house.
I loaded the floor over the garage with block. Rex was drinking gin and tonics
from the cooler. The wooden floor creaked from the weight. I jumped back to the concrete floor and grabbed a beer from the cooler.
"What's up stringbean"? Rex asked.
I said the floor was bad. Rex was a big guy, over 200 pounds.
He walked out over the wooden floor and it collapsed. A hundred block fell
down, then Rex fell on them, then nearly a hundred more fell on him.
I jumped down and started to pull the block off of him.
He said loudly "Leave me alone". After a half minute or so he stood up,
shaking all the block off. He was bloody. But what bothered him most
was his thumbnail, bent back. He grabbed a pair of pliers and pulled
his nail off.
"C'mon stringbean, lets go to the bar." So we went to a bar overlooking
Mexico. He had a gin and tonic and gave me ten bucks. Back then I could drink for hours on
ten bucks. He went to get fixed up and buy a new shirt.

My idiot boss didn't get the right kind of corner block so
I start tomorrow instead of today. I'll be sober in the morning.
We'll have to meet someday.

there are four links - Add to Journal, Self-delete, Edit post, and Reply to this post.
Hit Add to to Journal on your OPs and it will add them and make them easy to find and for others to find as well.

I think there is some setting in your account where you can make all OPs automatically load to your journal, but I forget how right now.

And she would make one for me. I was 11 or 12.

I worked for a building contractor for a couple of years. I spent most of my time on a framing crew, but he farmed me out to two old Polish guys who did his mason work from time to time. I carried a lot of block.
