(82,849 posts)I really like this movie, but at that, there are outstanding features that really elevate the movie: First are all the secondary players. While Joseph Cotten, Orson Welles, and Trevor Howard are the undisputed stars, the secondary players (including Bernard Lee, who would go on to play Q in the early James Bond movies) are also outstanding, and the studio didn't shy away from casting authentic ethnic actors in those roles. The shadowy figure of Harry Lime broods over the first half of the movie without ever being on screen; masterful writing.
The other feature is the final chase scene, and its homage to "Phantom of the Opera" (1925 Lon Chaney) and "M" (1931, Peter Lorre).
