Are You as Stupid as You Drive?

This is inspired by SCE's LOLcats thread. There is a pic of a guy with an expression on his face as he drives by some road incident.

Do you do that? I find I always have to see who is driving when they do some classic road move like a U-turn in front of oncoming cars, or even just sit in the middle of the road texting, like they're the only one in the universe. I will even maneuver my car by theirs during a stoplight so I can see just how someone looks who "did something like that." I'm very rude. I will stare and make them uncomfortable.

When/if you do, what do you usually find?

Sad to say, I usually find them texting at the stop light. Now reading your phone is one thing, but sneaking in a text is, besides being against the law, too much.

Sometimes when I stare, they get very self-conscious and start looking at themselves in the mirror or otherwise busy themselves behind the wheel. Kind of like a cat who self-grooms after falling off the bed.

When I encounter someone driving under the speed limit, going through a stop sign, going straight in the right-turn lane, driving slow in the left lane, or taking up the middle of a two lane road ..... it's a senior citizen who looks like he/she is somewhat terrified to be on the road.

Road rage is a real possibility, and I know whereof I speak. A friend gave a scowl to an unsafe driver and his candor was rewarded with three bullets in the chest. He survived and the rager went to prison, but he has no doubt about wishing he hadn't poked the hornet's nest.

You never know if you’re going to agitate some hot headed asshole who’s got a loaded gun under the seat. I also personally know of a person who was assaulted from giving another driver a dirty look. It’s just not worth the risk.

and I can't say as I blame them. I limit the places and times I drive because people drive so ruthlessly and carelessly.

I hope the NRA doesn't read here, though. They would see from a few of the above posts how totally and completely their guns have turned people's lives into fear. I wouldn't want them to have the satisfaction of knowing how successful they've been.

1. Distracted Drivers.
Cell Phones,in dash video screens, overly loud music systems, too much going on in the car (pets, kids and so on)
2. Total lack of driver skill and ability.
Just where do folk get their drivers training? So many folk make the most basic of mistakes its just not freaking funny! Those yeller colored thingies on the corners of your car are not freaking Christmas Lights, please learn how to use them properly! Left turn lanes don't mean you can make a wider right turn and just because you have those aircraft landing lights instead of headlights doesn't mean you need them in town or must leave them on when approaching oncoming traffic! Turn them suckers Down!!
3.People buying too much car.
Ok I get it,the 60's and 70's are having a bit of a resurgence but do you really need a 1100 horsepower Chevy Camaro, Dodge Hellcat,Roush Mustang Super Snake,Nissan GT-R or any number of other crazed hopped up rides? And what about safety issues and equipment? If one cruises the interwebs there are about 40 YouTube channels on rebuilding wrecked hot rods. Save yourself some money and stop risking the rest of our safety and buy a car you can handle...And if really feel the need to RIP off that 9.67 sec quarter mile PLEASE TAKE IT TO THE LOCAL DRAG STRIP!!

This was a few days ago. I was driving back on a stretch of highway with a speed limit of 65. That means people in the fast lane do 75. Well, I saw this Fiat 500 up ahead in the slow lane. Brake lights are coming on every few hundred yards. Little swerving here and there. Going 55 with a lot of pissed of drivers behind it. I passed the car and looked over to see what was going on. You guessed it, the driver was messing with her phone, eyes completely off the road.

The only time I will mess with my phone while driving is if I'm in heavy traffic moving a few inches an hour. Then I take pictures of the bad traffic and text them to people who will feel sorry for me. Other than that, I'm not going to look at my phone. But I see it all the time when I'm driving on the highway. For some reason, people think it's ok.

The main problem with people now days (and this extends into our society at all levels, not just out on the roads) in our country is a complete disregard for their fellow human beings. People just don't care about each other now days for the most part.

So that can manifest itself as texting and driving or drinking and driving or aggressive driving. When I look down in the cars that pass me in the interstate, I'd say that fully one fourth of the drivers have got a cell phone in their hand. I worked Friday and Saturday last weekend and I saw a lot of really stupid shit out there. Something about a holiday weekend really brings the stupidity out of some people. I saw lots of cars up on wreckers. Those were not likely due to breakdowns. We're talking DUIs.

will yield, I will let you get in - I will let you go first at a stop sign...let you cross on and on.

If there is ANY Doubt I let the other person go first.

I find I do that from a position of strength. It's me taking control of the situation and I've made sure we are all safe.

I drove for a living for over twenty years, fifteen in semis and a couple gigs as driving instructor for large vehicles. I, like Tobin, has seen everything out there in those driver's seats. Before cell phones, it was people having sex in odd positions while flying down the highway or drugs, reading the newspaper and putting on makeup in their rear-view mirror.

I have a few little descriptive quotes about these distracted or unskilled drivers;

"They only use their rear-view mirrors once every other Sunday whether they need to or not."

"pay attention, you'll live longer."

But then there are those who should have found someone to drive them, these include many elderly, anyone who isn't willing to obey the rules and probably 70% of the tourists on the road... particularly those from other countries. I live in a rural place but also very close to a major National Park so every town within 100 miles is essentially, anymore, a tourist town. Since it's a huge place, everyone wants to drive through at their leisure, which ends up being the much of the congestion problem. But the recent, exponential increase in tourists coming to this place has priced nearly all the locals out of housing and jobs as seasonal employers seek out foreign student workers for the service industry jobs which means the locals also have fewer job opportunities. But I digress, this was about driving...

So there is a major increase in foreign tourists meant more tourists, especially from a couple countries and one of them came in far larger numbers than the other so they started showing up on buses, I have since lost much of my respect for bus drivers for the way they drive. But this large population from a certain country discovered that they could rent cars so they started driving them all over the country, many without a license or training of any kind, but the next year, they started renting Cruise America RVs... virtual ocean going vessels on wheels. And since they really, truly don't know anything about driving other than ignition, go, stop and turn, they don't know what road signs, any of them, mean thus, they are a danger to everyone. I see more of them each year and it's alarming.

Yeah, I look to see who's driving. The ones who ride my bumper and eventually pass me in a less than safe fashion get a motion from me, because THEY are looking at me as if my existence is crime... I reach over to my left shoulder with my right hand and pretend to flick something distasteful off it in their direction. I usually slow down for anyone to pass me if it's safe, but I will normally yield since I'm not normally in any hurry to get anywhere. Thankfully I also live in a place where most of us go about life understanding that if something didn't get done today, it's probably okay to get to it tomorrow. I drive the speed limit and if I don't it's somewhere within 10mph lower. If that's too much for people on the Interstate, which I loathe, they can pass me, if I'm already passing someone, they just have to wait until I'm done.
