The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsFriday Night Moscow Mule Buzz. Oh, God! What a week! Hold me!
One of the roughest weeks in clinic for a while. I had to give it my all; and, as is often the case, I find myself wondering if my all is enough. On the plus side, I felt like I practiced good medicine even during the roughest patches.
I'm fighting anti-vaxxers in GD, tooth and nail.
I'm seeing our nation sink further and further into squalor and criminal behavior as a new normal.
And in the midst of it all, I play the 'Jupiter' section of Gustav Holst's "The Planets", and cry tears of joy at the 'I Vow To Thee' middle section of the piece, which is beautiful, awe-inspiring, uplifting, hopeful, triumphant, and life-affirming. Sometime life truly is good.
I'm drunk. Be patient with me...
I love you all...

(10,252 posts)A degenerate age. The good news is that in these degenerate times, there is ample opportunity to practice compassion and to relieve the suffering of others. I listen to classical music a lot to purify my mind and cleanse it of depressing thoughts generated by the appearance of so much ugliness in our politics. Mozart inspires me. Check out his opera "The Magic Flute." It is his Masonic opera and all about enlightenment.

The translator for the supratitles at Seattle Opera slipped in a few topical jokes that had the audience in stitches, including a reference to 'fake news'.

(66,386 posts)I know Houston has a highly-respected opera company.
I was born and raised in Texas, but didn't wake up to opera until I moved to the Pacific Northwest.

(10,252 posts)but later lived in Calif for 30+ years. Dallas has a new opera house. They don't get the A+ international stars, like SF and NYC. But they bring in younger artists, just starting their careers.
There are a lot of terrible operas. You have to pick and choose what appeals to you. Dallas is doing a Stravinsky opera this season. Pulcinella, which I've never heard. Also Don Carlos, that I saw once in SF.

I'm looking forward to seeing Don Carlo some day. But at close to four hours, it's something I'll need to carb up for...
