(17,006 posts)I hate it when that happens. Miss the days when Craftsman meant you could leave it to your grandkids.

(7,142 posts)but when you crank on wrenches and other tools building machines day after day you get what you pay for. I'm not going to mention the brand names but there are several brand names much better than Craftsman or Harbor Freight.
Anyone who buys tools from China doesn't really use them for a living, although I will say this as a confession. I walked by a Mr. Tool and saw a 26 inch 1/2 inch breaker bar, made in China. I was getting up in age so I bought it. We have to break loose a lot of rusted out old nuts and bolts that are hard too get at. I had to put that breaker bar diagonal in my tool box to get it to fit. You would be surprised how many youngsters in my crew asked to borrow that tool, but yeah, that was the only Chinese tool I had in my box.

(4,066 posts)My personal experience is they have cheaply made tools.
Made in China is not always a red flag. The outlet and price of the tool with a Made in China label is. For me, the combo of Harbor Freight and Made in China means: cheap shit not worth buying.

(16,319 posts)Except for maybe hilti. I needed a recip saw recently so I got the one at harbor freight, it's not as powerful as the brands at HD, but I've used it a lot now for tree trimming and it's holding up well. I did invest in a good carbide arbor blade. I think I paid 30 bucks for the saw.
Harbor freight is also good for odd tools that I don't want to spend a lot on, but pretty much all of my hand tools are American, including my stubby snapon ratcheting screwdriver. That was a gift to myself, lol. Kinda hard to justify the price.

(38,958 posts)I have become a regular shopper at Harbor Freight. I know that it may not be top notch, but I just use tools 🛠 for DIY projects around the house.

(15,740 posts)I think DeWalt tools are made in Taiwan, and I believe Milwaukee tools are now made in China. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
ProudLib72
(17,984 posts)My DeWalt angle grinder seized up about six months after I bought it. I still have a DeWalt portable table saw, though. It's mainly that experience with the angle grinder that got to me. Ever since then, I have gone with Milwaukee: big angle grinder, chop saw, cordless drill, sawzall. I haven't had an issue with any of those yet. I suppose that, when I do, you'll find me posting here about crappy ass brand name tools.

(16,319 posts)It's awesome. Best drill I have ever owned, powerful, small and light. The new brushless motors are quite the improvement, my milwaukee has 500 lbs of torque, the combo driver/hammer drill is rated at 750 and the cordless hammer drill is rated at 1000 pounds of torque!

(17,984 posts)Supposed to be the best of the best. You know what, I've had the same luck with Harbor Freight tools as I've had with name brands.

(17,444 posts)I buy Ryobi now. Half the price and just as good for my needs. Never had a Ryobi tool fail on me yet.
The sander that burned up was a sheet sander. However, I do have a DeWalt random orbital sander that is still going strong through a lot of abuse.
ProudLib72
(17,984 posts)It wasn't the motor. It was the base. I forget how it happened, but it became uneven somehow. Having said that, I remember that it was a refurbished unit from Amazon. The DeWalt angle grinder that seized was also from Amazon. There is kind of a theme happening here...

(26,330 posts)Ive purchased a couple new guns in fits of anger too.
But last time, I decided to do a little research. They are not that complicated. In fact, you might be able to pull it apart and lubricate the piston and get it to work. I have a Bostich pin nailer I did that to and it started working again.
Fortunately I didnt toss the old guns away.
LuckyCharms
(17,444 posts)but I had no time today. The one that jammed is a 16 gauge, and I've been waiting for a reason to buy a 15 gauge, so today was the day.
The gun had been getting temperamental the last few times I used it, and today it jammed. There's a latch-like device that you open up to clear the jams, and when I opened it, there were 3 nails stuck by their heads, splayed out like spaghetti strands. I tried for a long time to free them, but I couldn't. There was a small plate over the clearing device held on by two screws. I figured I would try taking that apart...got one of the screws off, stripped the head on the other one...gave up after that.
Ended up getting a Rigid 15 gauge angled finish nailer. Worked good all day. The one that crapped out was a Porter Cable 16ga, and I also have Porter Cable 18ga and 23ga. They have always been good guns for the most part.

(26,330 posts)Then I got the Bostich pin. I went though my pin nail phase. Lol.
I just got a Dewalt battery/cordless 18ga and I love it. No more lugging a compressor around for small projects. Keeping my fingers crossed it holds up .

(16,173 posts)as far as nail guns go, then they went to shit and wear out at least once a framing season.
I'm shopping for a table saw presently. Just an upgraded job site model that will stay in my shop and not see the light of day.
I've read reviews, I've talked to owners, I've weeded through the "this one has this, this one has that" crap. I've tried to get the people at the orange store and the blue store to let me fire the floor model up and run 4 sheets of 3/4 plywood through it to no avail.
Worst thing is having those same department people tell me to look for and old craftsman or delta on c list instead of buying a POS that will no doubt be broken within 80 days or less.
Gaud, what happened to quality?
LuckyCharms
(17,444 posts)I've had it for years. it always works good, but the rip fence shifts anywhere from 1/16 to 3/16's when you lock it down, so you have to account for that. Very frustrating.

that is 350 years old that i no longer shop at because their stuff breaks or falls apart as soon as you get it home. Bought by some American company a few years back. I bought a bathroom soap dish and glass in blue. Turns out the blue was blue paper mache. On a bathroom set. Total crap. So I hear you. Seems you have to pay a huge premium for adequate product these days. Making what was normal quality back 30 years ago totally unaffordable.

(23,251 posts)If they make 'em to last forever--no more sales! (no more $$$ coming in) So they make 'em to crap out after a time, and thus need replacing--voila! more $$$ coming in.
My parents had a freezer that lasted for fifty years(!)--how many additional freezers did that company sell them during that time? None, because that one did the job. Now, if it had died after TEN years, they might've had another sale.
