Any Etsy sellers here? I bought something on Etsy, seller sent me a fake tracking number, for an item that looks like it was sent 2 months ago to a different buyer in a different state. Outside Etsy system, seller sent me in an email, a photo of my tracking number, which does not match the tracking number in Etsy system. I'm a first time Etsy buyer, and as much precaution as I took, smells like I've been scammed. It's 3 weeks now, and I do not have items. Any other options besides opening an Etsy case?

(12,904 posts)Im not an Etsy seller or buyer, but I would think opening a case would be the right move. There are likely others getting ripped off.

(60,010 posts)One seller tried to demand more money than agreed upon after I ordered, claiming she had mis-priced the item. She refused to honor the purchase price, I canceled the order, after several back and forth which raised my suspicions.
the item was listed again on her site, for the same price I had tried to buy it for, so I had a friend, who has an Etsy shop, order the item.
Same thing happened.
My friend and I both separately opened a case.
Etsy sent us basically a "no harm, no foul" response.
I have learned to read the seller's conditions of purchase very very carefully, did get ripped off with a fake item once, but usually by now I have enough experience on Etsy to buy carefully.
90% of the time have had good experiences.

(1,345 posts)then if they don't fix it, go to your credit card and say it was a fraudulent transaction. If that doesn't do it, call the A-Team.

(34,136 posts)Since the OP said it's been three weeks they may be approaching that deadline.
I'd call the credit card company, explain the problem. If the deadline to contest is near, do that. Then try the Etsy process. If it turns out to be an honest mistake by the seller, then a different payment can be arranged.

(32,645 posts)I've never had a problem, even when buying internationally. For example I've purchased from sellers in Germany and UK, and it has always gone smoothly. If you've been ripped off by a "fake seller" you'll be covered by the Etsy management. I hope that's not the case though. The sellers I've purchased from have all been great. I stopped buying from E-Bay about 10 years ago when I had a couple transactions go bad. Etsy has filled that void for me. Good luck!

(70,706 posts)Etsy/eBay have been fine for me, description/delivery/whatever.
In the past 3 months or so, I've ambled out to a European version and almost all of the sellers have been the same/good. Am waiting for the last couple to deliver, talking TWO MONTHS. Seems like they have a scam in common, "Have been in the hospital, will mail your stuff tomorrow or next couple of days."
A couple of sellers had their own versions, "I don't sell to the U.S." and "I don't mail GLASS."

(42 posts)I usually limit my Etsy purchases to those with a fairly high number of 5 star reviews. I'm not sure how much of a central complaint system Etsy has but if you went through Paypal, you can file a complaint with them. They usually manage to reach the correct result eventually but they sometimes take a very long time investigating even where it's obvious that the buyer is entitled to a refund/credit.
If you ordered and paid with a credit card (through Paypal or not) and you don't receive your order within the estimated delivery time frame, and don't get a working tracking number to show that it was even shipped, if it was me, I would just request a charge back directly from the credit card company. Most efficient way to deal with it.
