(11,802 posts)Somehow, I've never gotten tired of this. I must be the only dude on the planet who turns it up instead of changing the station. The guitar on this number is just so sick...

(23,123 posts)growing up in Jacksonville. They used to be really cool, back in the day, and were super fun to hang out with. They were hippieish at the time - anti-government anti-war. I moved, they moved, they changed while in GA and became a lot more rw. I still loved their music, and cried after the plane crash. When I moved back to Jax to help my parents, I went to just 1 of their concerts. OMG, the red necks were there in abundance (tis was 1996) and I was uncomfortable and never went to another.
They still wrote some great songs back in the day and Free Bird will always soar for me, although you couldn't pay me to go to one of their concerts these days.

(4,608 posts)and one memory sticks out above the rest.
I was originally hired as a white shirt (usher) but halfway through the season people had quit and we were short on green shirts (security). So they slapped one on me and I became security. No training, and I'm not really security guard material, but they just needed bodies in green shirts.
Anyhoo, Skynyrd was playing and the night was going well. Drunk and rowdy, but nothing bad or too crazy in my area. Towards the end of the show my supervisor came up and handed me a fire extinguisher. "Go to the lawn and wait," he said. So I'm like, "Huh?" He said, "You'll see."
I took the extinguisher and went to the lawn. A few other bewildered green shirts were already up there. We waited.
Sure enough, Freebird was the encore and people tried to start lighting bonfires. And what ever else was flammable. It's the only time in my life (thankfully) I've ever used a fire extinguisher.
I hate Freebird.
