What is the single greatest line in movie history...?

...there are so many to choose from. It's hard to overlook, "this man may look like an idiot, and he may talk like an idiot--but don't let that fool you. He really is an idiot". Or--"it's only a flesh wound". But I think my choice would be, "forget it, Jake. it's Chinatown". What are your picks?

29. "I'll be back" or my favorite rant by Will
Wed Mar 20, 2019, 05:57 AM
Mar 2019

WILL in Good Will Hunting
Why shouldn't I work for the N.S.A.? That's a tough one, but I'll take a shot. Say I'm working at N.S.A. Somebody puts a code on my desk, something nobody else can break. Maybe I take a shot at it and maybe I break it. And I'm real happy with myself, cause I did my job well. But maybe that code was the location of some rebel army...

*Cut to Sean's office*

... in North Africa or the Middle East. Once they have that location, they bomb the village where the rebels were hiding and fifteen hundred people I never met, never had no problem with, get killed. Now the politicians are sayin', "Oh, send in the Marines to secure the area" cause they don't give a shit. It won't be their kid over there, gettin' shot. Just like it wasn't them when their number got called, cause they were pullin' a tour in the National Guard. It'll be some kid from Southie takin' shrapnel in the ass.

And he comes back to find that the plant he used to work at got exported to the country he just got back from. And the guy who put the shrapnel in his ass got his old job, cause he'll work for fifteen cents a day and no bathroom breaks. Meanwhile, he realizes the only reason he was over there in the first place was so we could install a government that would sell us oil at a good price. And, of course, the oil companies used the skirmish over there to scare up domestic oil prices. A cute little ancillary benefit for them, but it ain't helping my buddy at two-fifty a gallon.

And they're takin' their sweet time bringin' the oil back, of course, and maybe even took the liberty of hiring an alcoholic skipper who likes to drink martinis and fuckin' play slalom with the icebergs, and it ain't too long 'til he hits one, spills the oil and kills all the sea life in the North Atlantic. So now my buddy's out of work and he can't afford to drive, so he's got to walk to the fuckin' job interviews, which sucks cause the shrapnel in his ass is givin' him chronic hemorrhoids. And meanwhile he's starvin', cause every time he tries to get a bite to eat, the only blue plate special they're servin' is North Atlantic scrod with Quaker State.

So what did I think? I'm holdin' out for somethin' better. I figure fuck it, while I'm at it why not just shoot my buddy, take his job, give it to his sworn enemy, hike up gas prices, bomb a village, club a baby seal, hit the hash pipe and join the National Guard? I could be elected president.

Mar 2019

… "You ain't heard nothing' yet!" by Al Jolson. Granted, other lines were spoken, even on title cards, and Jolson is not recalled as much... but, historically, the line was important. I would also cite "Rosebud" from Orson Welles - it showed me that film writers and directors could (and would) turn filmmaking into a limitless creative process. For stars (actors) maybe "I want to be alone" from Greta Garbo in Grand Hotel. She put the "movie star" on a throne... and, when the lights go off in the cinema, there you are... alone with the film.

So many cons in that movie. Of course the main con on lonnegan, but Snyder got conned, the western union con was hilarious, and even the audience gets conned (who is the glove?)

Plus great acting, great score, great period piece.

...Snyder and Lonnigan were still right there on the street, Lonnigan still crying about his money. And the "dead" Hooker and Gondorph walk right into them. And of course, they--the heroes--have to go underground and stay underground the rest of their lives, in case Lonnigan ever discovers them alive and well. And he didn't strike me as somebody who had a sense of humor about these things...

Not surprisingly, in those brief statements the Hulk reveals both a larger vocabulary and stronger ability to express himself coherently than our [p]resident, and reveals more introspection than Fat Donnie ever has.

The question now is, what additional powers does Captain Marvel have that may enable her to join in defeating Thanos and restoring the universe he so casually destroyed? Is she the key to that 1-in-14 million solution to vanquishing Thanos?

BTW, how did Scott Lang (Ant Man) escape the quantum realm, anyway?

"Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."

It bears repeating the greatest quote from, in my humble opinion, the greatest film ever made. Although I have lived nearly six decades, I had never seen it until recently. I immediately watched it again and then purchased the DVD. At first I really didn't understand everything that happens in "Chinatown." The film demands that you pay attention. It's far more than a murder mystery/government corruption story. It's far more than Faye Dunaway's famous scene about her daughter's father. This film is about the aspects of life that few escape. Even if the film turns out not to be your cup of tea, it is worth watching for the most breathtaking cinematography I've ever seen in a film. I created a new account for DM just for this. I never hype a film because I don't want to color the opinion of a person who's never seen it. I make this my only exception for "Chinatown."

'Did I remember to tell you today that I adore you?'

The line is spoken by Walter Huston, playing the character of Sam Dodsworth. He says this line twice in the film, both times to his wife Fran, played by Ruth Chatterton.

The first time he says it, it is said with absolute love.
The second time he says it, he says it with the utter loss one can only know from having an absolutely broken heart.

The second time he says that line, it tears me apart.
Every time.
And I have seen this movie many times.

It's one of the best movies that I bet a lot of people have never seen.

The line comes right after this setup:
Two cops from NJ are trying to find a bank robber who escaped into the wilderness of Montana. They are having a terrible time. They got lost, fell into a river, clothes floated away in the river, no food, the bank robber got the gun from one of them.

Right after the above clip, the one who still had his clothes suggests that they give it up and get help from the local sheriff. The other refuses to give up the chase. When asked why, he yells

Because he's from New Jersey, too!
