The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI have a silly question for you. I need your advice and suggestions.
Here's the thing. I'm having my book published in early spring and I plan to throw a little Sunday reception for those who helped me, gave support and advice. It will be a book signing event, also called a book launch I am told. I want to have a sheet cake made to serve my guests.
My quandary is: how should I instruct the bakery to decorate the cake? It's a collection of art essays so I thought I'd ask them to put a book frame on it with the title written inside the frame, and the date. We will, of course, take pictures of the cake before it is sliced and served. I will try to post the pic here in the DU Lounge.
Do you have any ideas?

(63,912 posts)I thought of asking if they could simply reproduce Rembrandt's "Night Watch" but that seemed a bit extreme .

(63,912 posts)I wonder if the art is still under copyright. What is it, 75 years before it becomes "public domain"?

(63,912 posts)My daughter and daughter in law (both professional editors/graphic design/layout people) took it upon themselves to do this labor of love. They have finished the modern era (20th century) and will tackle art of earlier centuries next. So they are doing this in batches.

(12,253 posts)If you are having your launch in a bookstore you might check with them beforehand about serving food. If it is to be held in a more intimate setting and you simply want to thank your friends and colleagues, use the title of your book if it will fit on a cake. If the title is short maybe add "with thanks to my friends" or "friends are family." You're a writer; you can handle it! In any case, congratulations on your new book and have a great launch!

(63,912 posts)A dear friend gave me a title he had originally wanted to use for his own book of poetry but was talked out of it and regrets not using it. so he gave it to me. I consider it a precious gfit. He is one of my biggest fans and was reading them when I was publishing them here on DU (I published them here first and Skinner told me they weren't copyright covered here so no problem).
